What many of us don’t know, however, is the brain behind the epic work which is George R R Martin. He is a writer, a film producer, and a screenwriter among many other things. George R R Martin: Bio

It was as George Raymond Martin that the writer was born on September 20, 1948, in Bayonne, New Jersey. The second “R” in his name, Richard, would come later when he was confirmed as a Catholic. Of German, French, Irish, and English descent, he was raised alongside two sisters by his mother Margaret and his father Raymond Collins Martins.

Martins and his two younger sisters Darleen and Janet were brought up in a very poor family that had it hard to even provide the most decent of accommodation for them at some point.

Like many great writers you know, George R R Martin began writing when he was still young and by the time he was 21, he had already made a profession as a writer. For his education, the writer who would later mesmerize many attended the Mary Jane Donohoe School from where he proceeded to the Marist High School. Next, he went on to obtain a degree in Journalism from the Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois and then got a Master’s degree from the same institution.

After he was through with his education at a time when the Vietnam War was on, he would go on to serve with VISTA as a volunteer. At the same time, he became a teacher as well as a chess director. The interesting thing is that it was his work, most especially with chess that would help him as a writer because as he pointed out, it afforded him the time to work on his writings.

George R R Martin As A Writer

Sustaining a writing career that has gone on for close to 50 years, Martins began with short stories before he kept expanding. The Game of Thrones writer began selling his works since his early 20s, but it was much later that he made a full-time career out of writing as it was not able to pay his bills in the earliest times.

Among his most popular works is the series, A Song of Ice and Fire. The series has works including A Game of Thrones which was originally published in 1996, A Clash of Kings (1998), A Storm of Swords (2000), A Feast for Crows (2005), and A Dance with Dragons (2011). Other works from the series that are yet to be released are The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring.

An extraordinary writer, George R R Martins wishes that should he pass away, he would want all the works that he has not completed to be destroyed. This is simply because he would not want anyone to complete his works for him.

Apart from the fact that his works have been adapted to great movies, he has won many awards having published that include short stories, novellas, quote collections, novels, and many more. Among the awards he has won thus far are close to 10 Hugo Awards, Primetime Emmy Award, and Nebula Awards.

Wife, Does He Have Children?

George has been married twice thus far in his life. His first marriage was to Gale Burnick and that was in 1975. Before meeting Gale and marrying her, he had also dated another writer, Lisa Tuttle for some time. His marriage which had Bridge Over Troubled Waters as the wedding song did not last long as it ended only 4 years later in 1979.

After his marriage to Gale Burnick crashed, he would go on to marry Parris McBride in 2011. The two met as far back as 1975, but it was until in the 1980s that they began dating. Before they decided to get married, the two had been living together for many years.

It gets very interesting to note that with both his first wife, Gale Burnick and Parris McBride who was his partner for a long time before settling down as man and wife, George does not have any kids. In fact, he has never had any children in his entire life.

Together with his wife, Parris McBride, George now lives in New Mexico where he has been for a long time.

Height and Weight

A rich bearded and grey-haired individual who has since gone past the mid ages, the writer is not necessarily a man of much height even though he is well built. His actual height is 5 feet 6 inches (1.68 m). That said, his weight or general body measurements are still unknown.
