Due to insufficient funds, Gina Torres missed out on different opportunities to get a college education but this did not deter her from exploring her talent in the performing arts. She took to acting when it was clear that college is not forthcoming and admittedly, that was the right move for her.

Born in Manhattan on April 25, 1969, the actress joined her family in Washington Heights as the youngest of three children. Both of her parents (Rebecca and Richard) were of Cuban descent (multiracial). In addition to English, Gina also speaks Spanish fluently.

She got her early education at Fiorello H. LaGuardia High School of Music & Art and Performing Arts in New York City. Additionally, she received training in opera and jazz which helped in her performances in a gospel choir. Though she got many admission offers from different universities, Gina couldn’t honour any of them for financial reasons and instead, she opted for a career in the arts.

Shortly after launching her acting career, her role in Cleopatra 2525 landed her the ALMA Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Syndicated Drama Series in 2001. Again, she scored a nod for an International Press Academy’s Golden Satellite Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Drama in 2014 which is in recognition for her portrayal of Jasmine in Angel. The same year, she appeared in seven episodes on 24 (season three) as Julia Milliken. In 2005, she lent her voice to the character of Vixen in the animated series Justice League Unlimited and also ousted Jada Pinkett Smith for the voice-over of the character of Niobe in The Matrix Online.

Earlier in her career, she also made appearances in blockbuster films like The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions. She was the wife of the character played by in the film I Think I Love My Wife.

Her role in Fox’s short-lived Firefly series which lasted for just one season is one of her popular stints and she reprised it in the film Serenity in 2005. She was later cast on the legal drama Suits as the main character Jessica Pearson. She will also star and produce a Suits spin-off centered around her character, Jessica Pearson in 2018.

Since 2002, Gina Torres has been married to actor Laurence Fishburne who she played a married couple with on the show Hannibal from 2013 to 2015. The two got engaged in February 2001 and their engagement metamorphosed into marriage on September 22, 2002, at a ceremony that took place at The Cloisters museum in New York City.

In 2007, the couple welcomed their only child together, a daughter named Delilah. Gina also plays the role of stepmother to the two children fathered by Fishburne from his previous marriage to actress Hajna O. Moss. Gina’s stepchildren include Langston (son) born in 1987 and Montana (daughter) born in 1991.

While their relationship seemed rosy and was one of the most admired in Hollywood, trouble hit their paradise in 2016 and in September 2017 the actress went public with the details of her separation from Fishburne. Apparently, they have not been together for a while but decided to make it official in 2017.

Notwithstanding, Gina said they are in a good place and there is no bad blood between them. Additionally, they will be the best parents they can be to their lovely daughter.
