Grant was born on October 5, 1972, in Texas as Grant Graham Hill. He is the only child born to Calvin and Janet Hill. His father Calvin Hill is a retired NFL Pro Bowl running back and his mom is a successful attorney and consultant.

Having a father who was an All-America football player at Yale and won the Rookie of the Year award in 1969, it isn’t surprising that Hill grew up loving Sports. As a child, he played both basketball and soccer but his father didn’t allow him to play football until High School. By the time Grant Hill got into High School, he had already made up his mind to play basketball.

As a freshman at South Lakes High School, Reston, he was asked to skip junior varsity and join the varsity team. Hill lived his whole High School days for basketball if he wasn’t at the court playing, he was definitely before the TV set watching NBA and college games. During his senior days, he recorded an average of thirty points per game.

After High School, the promising player knew he wanted to take his love and passion for the game a step further, he headed to Duke University, against his mother’s wish for him to attend Georgetown University and his dad’s option of the University of North Carolina.

Career

At Duke University, he played four years with the Blue Devils. He won the national titles in 1991 and 1992 respectively and this made Duke the first Division I program to win the title, consecutively since 1973.

In 1993, he won the Henry Iba Corinthian Award as the nation’s top defensive player, and the following year, he was named the ACC Player of the Year, becoming the first player ever in the history of ACC to record more than 700 rebounds, 400 assists, 200 steals, 1,900 points and 100 blocked shots.

As a result of his successful collegiate career, Grant Hill became the 8th player in the history of Duke University to have his jersey number (33) retired. He was among the team that represented the U.S and won the bronze medal at the 1991 Pan American Games, held in Havana, Cuba.

After his graduation from Duke University, his professional career kicked off almost immediately as he was chosen third in the first round of the 1994 NBA draft by the Detroit Pistons. Signing an eight-year contract worth $45-million, Grant Hill described his arrival at the NBA as nothing short of a dream come true.

By the end of the first season, he set the records straights again by winning the NBA Rookie of the Year Award, which he shared with Dallas Mavericks’ Jason Kidd. Hill became the first Piston player to win the award after Dave Bing won it back in the 1966–67 season.

He also won the Sporting News Rookie of the Year Award and was named an all-All-NBA first Team in 1997 and All-NBA Second Teams in 1996, 1998, 1999 and 2000 respectively. Hill soon became a regular player at the NBA All-Star Game, and in the 1994/1995 season, he made history as the first rookie to ever lead in an NBA All-Star fan balloting, with 1,289,585 votes, defeating .

He remained with the Detroit Pistons till 2000 when he was signed to Orlando Magic in a seven years contract worth $92.8 million and in exchange for Ben Wallace and Chucky Atkins, During his time at Orlando, he awarded the Joe Dumars Trophy, which is usually presented to the NBA Sportsmanship Award Winner.

After the 2007–08 season, Hill Grant became an unrestricted free agent but that was not for long as his agent, Lon Babby, soon got him signed with the Phoenix Suns, with whom he remained with till the end of the 2011–12 season. After his contract with the Suns expired, teams like the New York Knicks, Los Angeles Lakers, the Oklahoma City Thunder, Portland Trail Blazers, and Miami Heat all came seeking to sign him but Hill chose to go with the Clippers.
