Known by her honorary title of Mayor of Hollywood, the actress and comedian, who has eight Emmy Awards in various categories to her name, as well as three American Comedy Awards, three Screen Actors Guild Awards, and a Grammy Award, is best known for her appearances on shows like Boston Legal, Mama’s Family, and Saturday Night Live but her performances as Sue Ann Nivens on The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1973–77), Rose Nylund on The Golden Girls (1985–92), and Elka Ostrovsky on Hot in Cleveland (2010–15) are, however, what enshrined her as a legendary figure in the movie business.

Betty White, who is getting close to having spent a century on earth, was born on the 17th of January, 1922, in Oak Park, Illinois. She is the only child of Christine Tess (née Cachikis) and Horace Logan White. Her mother was a homemaker while her father worked as a lighting company executive. She has all of Danish, Greek, English, and Welsh heritage.

White’s formative years were during the height of the great depression. Her father was said to have built radios and sold them to make extra money. He at times even traded them for other goods, including dogs on some occasions. The young girl went on to receive her education at Horace Mann School Beverly Hills and Beverly Hills High School where she graduated from in 1939.

Due to her love for animals and interest in wildlife, Betty White had originally aspired to become a forest ranger. She was, however, unable to make this dream a reality because women were not allowed to serve as rangers. This turned out to be a blessing in disguise to all of us that have grown to love her work as she moved to pursue her interest in writing before opting to try her hand as an actress. She went on to launch her acting career three months after graduating from high school and has since then continued to entertain each and every one of us.

Betty White does not have any biological children of her own, even though she has been married three times in the past. The actress and comedian was first married to a U.S. Army Air Corps pilot Dick Barker. The pair exchanged vows in 1945 and lasted together for less than a year before their happily ever after came to an abrupt end. Her next go at marriage was with a Hollywood agent named Lane Allen. The union began in 1947 and lasted for two years before they called quits and went their separate ways in 1949.

Following two failed attempts at marriage, White spent more than a decade as a single woman until she met television host and actor on his game show Password in 1961. The two began dating almost soon after they met and after a two-year-long relationship, they got married on the 14th of June, 1963. It is said that Ludden had to propose to his wife at least two times before she accepted his request.

After exchanging vows, Betty White added her husband’s surname to her own as she became known as Betty White Ludden. She further became a stepmother to his three children; a son named David and two daughters named Martha and Sarah, from his first marriage to Margaret McGloin Ludden. Ludden had been married to his first wife for 18 years before she died of cancer in the same year that he met White.

White and Ludden appeared in numerous TV shows and plays together, including The Odd Couple, Match Game, Critic’s Choice, and Janus. They remained happily married for close to two decades before the cold hands of death took away Ludden on the 9th of June, 1981. He died from stomach cancer.

Betty White has since the death of her third husband remained single. She famously told in an interview that no one needs the rest after they have had the best following his question on why she has not remarried.
