Geena was born as Virginia Elizabeth Davis to William Davis and Lucille Davis on January 21, 1956, in Wareham, Massachusetts. She has an older brother named Dan Davis. Their dad used to be a Civil engineer and a church minister until he passed away on April 2, 2009, at the age of 96 while their mother also died at the age of 82, on November 15, 2001. She learned to play flute and piano when she was a teenager and also served as an organist in her local Church.
Geena studied at Wareham High School. During her high school days, her tall height made her feel intimidated among her peers, but it helped earn her a spot in her high school female basketball team. After high school, Davis applied to New England College located in Henniker, New Hampshire. After a year in New Hampshire, she then transferred to Boston University where she graduated with a degree in drama in 1979.
Following her graduation from college, she moved to New York, where she started to work as a waitress and later worked for Ann Taylor as a mannequin. At last, Geena secured a modeling job with Zoli Modeling Agency.
In 1982, she took up her first role as an actress when she featured in a comedy movie titled Tootsie as April Page. Next in her acting career were a number of TV series, between 1983 and 1984. She featured in several TV series some of which include Buffalo Bill as Wendy Killian, Fantasy Island as Patricia Grayson, Riptide as Dr. Melba Bozinsky and as Karen Nicholson in Family Ties. In 1988, Geena Davis won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in the role she played in Accidental Tourist. By this time, her name was already making waves in Hollywood. Being a year old in her second marriage with Jeff Goldblum, she starred with him for the third time, in the film Earth Girls Are Easy. In 1990, she took up a leading role which she will always be remembered for when she played the role of Thelma Dickinson in Thelma & Louise. Her role in the film earned her multiple awards and award nominations. In 1999, she played the role of Mrs. Eleanor in the award-winning family comedy film Stuart Little. She maintained her role as Mrs. Eleanor in the sequential series of the film.
Between the year 2000 and 2001, Davis starred in 22 episodes of The Geena Davis Show. She then starred as President Mackenzie Allen in Commander in Chief between 2005 and 2006. Her role in the TV series portrayed her as the first American female president. The role earned her a Golden Globe Award for Best Performance by an Actress in Television Series in 2006.

They got married in 2001 and the marriage was legally terminated in the early months of 2018 after which Davis released a statement which claimed the pair were never legally married.
