On the 14th of July, 1960, in the Cook County village of Evergreen Park, Illinois, Eileen (née Carney) and Frank Lynch welcomed their daughter, Jane Marie Lynch. Her father, who is of Irish descent, worked as a banker while her mother, of Irish and Swedish ancestry, was a homemaker and secretary.

Lynch received her high school education at Thornridge High School in Dolton Illinois. After high school, she auditioned to join the improvisational comedy troupe, The Second City, as she further began to act in the Steppenwolf Theatre Company and Annoyance Theater. Having made a name for herself in the improv comical world, Lynch moved to film acting. Her film debut was a small role in the comedy Vice Versa (1988) which starred Judge Reinhold and Fred Savage.

In the 1990s, Jane Lynch appeared mostly in television commercials although she was able to land another minor role in The Fugitive (1993) alongside and . Her big break came in 2000 when she was cast by director Christopher Guest to play the role of a butch lesbian personal dog handler called Christy Cummings in the dog show mockumentary, Best in Show (2000).
