Uma Thurman is an American actress with the ethereal look. She became an iconic female film character in the 1990s starring in the lead roles of films such as Kiss Daddy Goodnight where she played the character of Laura, Dangerous Liaisons as Cecile de Volanges, Henry & June as June Miller, Pulp Fiction as Mia Wallace, Batman & Robin as Dr. Pamela Isley/Poison Ivy, and many others.

The 6 feet tall actress took advantage of her staggering height and forayed into the modeling industry. She went on to model for fashion and beauty companies such as Glamour, British Vogue, Prada, Lancome, TAG Heuer, and Louis Vuitton.

Who is Uma Thurman?

Uma Karuna Thurman was born on April 29, 1970, and given the name (Uma) of a Hindu goddess which means ‘splendor’. She grew up in an orthodox family and was the daughter of Robert Alexander Farrar Thurman, a Buddhist professor and writer, and Nena von Schlebruhgge Thurman, a former supermodel, and owner of a mountain retreat.

Uma had an ideal upbringing in the Indo-Himalayan town of Almora and Amherst, Massachusetts. She has three brothers (Ganden, Dechen Karl, and Mipam) and a half-sister (Taya) from her father’s former marriage. Uma first went to Amherst Public Schools before attending the boarding school – Northfield Mount Hermon School – in Massachusetts.

At age 15, she dropped out of boarding school and signed on to the modeling agency Click Models. Her lanky stature got her appearances in Glamour and British Vogue for both 1985 and 1986 December covers. Uma also tried her hands on acting and her first cast call was in 1987 for the teen film Kiss Daddy Goodnight where she appeared as Laura. She was as well cast in 1988 movies such as Johnny Be Good, The Adventures of Baron Munchausen and Dangerous Liaisons which became an Oscar-winning film.

Uma Thurman became a superstar overnight landing roles in Where the Heart Is (1990), Robin Hood (1991), Final Analysis (1992) and Jennifer 8 (1992). Her fame stalled with the release of Henry & June (1990) which got the NC-17 ratings because most newspapers did not want to advertise.

Fortunately, the now 5ft 11in actress bounced back with the release of Pulp Fiction in 1994. Her brilliant performance as Mia Wallace earned her an Academy Award and Golden Globe award for Best Supporting Actress. Her next films were A Month by the Lake, Batman & Robin (which was said to be one of the worst films of all time), Beautiful Girls, The Truth About Cats & Dogs, Chelsea Walls, Vatel, Tape, and Gattaca (which also featured her ex-husband ).

Quentin Tarantino reconnected back with Uma Thurman (who was by this time referred to as his muse) in the making of the comedy Kill Bill: Volume 1 (2003) and Kill Bill: Volume 2 (2004) and she featured as the lead character The Bride/Beatrix Kiddo. Uma had to learn martial arts, swordsmanship and Japanese within three months for the role. She was also nominated for three MTV Movie Awards and two Golden Globe Awards.

Uma Thurman still received more criticisms in movies where she performed poorly including My Super Ex-Girlfriend, The Life Before Her Eyes, The Accidental Husband, My Zinc Bed, Motherhood, Bel Ami, Playing for Keeps and Movie 43. All of them got negative reviews from critics, however, she made headlines on television series like Smash (2012), Amercian Dad (2014), The Slap (2015), and Imposter (2017).

She debuted on stage with The Misanthrope in 1999, performing the role Celimene and a second time in 2017 for the play The Parisian Woman performing as Chloe.

What is Her Net Worth?

Uma Thurman started receiving a staggering $12.5 million per film in the mid-2000s after her laudable performance on the comedy film Kill Bill Volume 1 and 2. Even in movies which were not commercially successful, the actress was well renumerated – a case in point is when she was paid $14 million for her role in the poorly rated My Super Ex-Girlfriend. Currently, the actress has a net worth estimated to be about $45 million.

Family Life – Spouse, Children

The actress was once married to English actor, Gray Oldman in 1990, however, they got divorced in 1992 with no child. Uma then married Ethan Hawke, a co-actor, on May 1, 1998. Their marriage produced two children; Maya Hawke and Levon Thurman-Hawke born in 1998 and 2002 respectively. The union ended in divorce in August 2005.

Thurman then took to dating Arpad Busson, a French financier who is based in London, UK. The lovebirds got engaged in 2008 and then called it off in 2009 before reconciling their differences and resuming their engagement. In April 2014, they broke up again and never came back together again. However, the couple had a daughter together named Rosalind Arusha Arkadina Altalune Florence Thurman-Busson born on July 15, 2012.
