It has been a blossoming career for the talented player ever since he made his debut in 2006.
You may wonder why we said that Howie’s story is significant for a determined person, the reason is that Kendrick played baseball all through his high school and college but got his breakthrough when he left college. Howie was spotted by Anaheim Angels scout Tom Kotchman on a fateful day and became part of the team fully when he was selected at the MLB draft. Today he is indeed reaping the fruit of his labour. Read on to find out more about his career.
Details About His Contracts and Earnings
Howie Kendrick’s first baseball contract was with the Los Angeles Anaheim Angels. He was signed to the team in 2002 and started to exhibit his distinctive skills then. Making his debut in the 2006 season in the Angels’ game with the Detroit Tigers, he became the starting second baseman. Howie soon played as a free agent for the St. Louis Cardinals in the 2006/07 season and then returned to the Angels.
He signed a whopping 33.5 million dollar contract with the Anaheim Angels in 2012 and drew the attention of many stakeholders. That season he had 8 home runs and 67 RBIs and batted .287.
Howie’s next stint was with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2016. He joined the team after being traded by the Angels in exchange for Andrew Heaney. He had experienced a little downtime at the team as a result of a hamstring injury. But having managed to pull through the season, he was signed on a two-year contract worth $20 million by the Dodgers that same year. The 2016 season saw Howie make the record as the player with the highest ground ball percentage at 61 percent.
In 2017 Howie Kendrick joined the Washington Nationals on trade for McKenzie Mills. The second baseman became $7 million richer after the season when the Nationals resigned him for two years. Howie’s 2019 season with the Nationals was glorious; he hit a grand slam in October that year, making it the second extra-inning grand slam in MLB postseason history.
Towards the end of 2019, reports had it that the MLB player renewed his contract with the Nationals on a deal of $6.25 million. The deal saw him earn the same amount as his annual salary.
Injuries and Other Career Challenges He’s Faced
Injuries are more than normal in the world of sports and the likes of Howie Kendrick have gotten a fair share of them. But this does not mean he is a step or more behind where he should be. Howie Kendrick only suffered a few setbacks as a result of injury. The first was during his time with the Los Angeles Dodgers. The professional player had suffered a hamstring injury in August 2014 and was placed on the injured list.
Howie managed this throughout the season and of course, missed a lot of games. But this was not going to stop him from trying in any way. At the end of the season, he had played only 117 games with .295, 9 homers and 54 RBI. Howie’s effort earned him a whopping $15.8 million offer but he turned it down.
The second baseman strained his right abdomen in April 2017. At the time, he was with the Philadelphia Phillies. Kendrick who was traded to the team a year earlier joined the 10-day disabled list at the time. Howie Kendrick’s 2018 injury crowned his entire ordeals because it was the highest and most serious. His right Achilles tendon was badly ruptured and Howie had to end the season prematurely. A lot was at stake, most especially his career.
Several reports speculated a possible change in his contract as it was believed he would not manage his injury rightly. But then he pulled through; Howie has struggled to attain an enviable height in baseball.
