After just two seasons, CBS, the official network of the police procedural TV drama series Instinct, has decided they aren’t going to be doing any more seasons of the show. This was confirmed in a tweet by creator Micheal Rauch on August 16, 2019, and acknowledged in follow-up tweets by lead star casts and . The news was met with an unprecedented response of surprise, anger and sadness by the show’s millions of adoring fans who eagerly looked forward to seeing more of the Instinct cast members.
Fans were taken aback by the sudden decision which was made mid-season of Season 2, wondering why a cancellation was opted for, and hoping that an alternate network would pick up the show should CBS maintain their position.
From reactions like this, it could be safe to assume that despite the weak critical review the show had received since its launch in 2018, the viewing public had a contrary opinion. How this all plays out and what becomes of the TV drama eventually will be left to be seen, however, the most surprising decision by CBS has led to varying speculations. Was there a fall-out somewhere? Was it no longer profitable? Here is what we know so far.
The Untold Reason Why There Won’t Be an Instinct Season 3
The police procedural TV mystery drama series Instinct is inspired by author James Patterson’s book, Murder Games. It tells the story of Dylan Reinhart (played by famed actor Alan Cumming), an author, college professor and former CIA operative who is drawn back to his old life of helping the NYPD solve some of their most bizarre cases after a book he wrote became a serial killer’s inspiration in committing countless murders.
Ratings for the show hadn’t been particularly strong since its launch on March 18, 2018. With a 5.44 average rating and a series score of 53 out of 100, it would seem that CBS may have based their decision on the show’s rating performance. Indeed, Instinct had been the network’s lowest ranking summertime originals.
That it had also been ‘accused’ of bearing a storyline very akin to the film The Bone Collector, hadn’t helped either. One speculation had remained though and it had been that Alan Cumming, a leading Instinct cast member has received work on another project and as a result wouldn’t be able to reprise his role for a new Instinct season.
Despite these, fans weren’t appeased. Instead, they turned the tables, faulting the network’s poor marketing efforts and wrong airing times for the show’s poor outing.
The decision to cancel Instinct may clearly have been a sum of many factors, however, one thing that is certain is that the show will be missed by the dedicated fans it had managed to garner for itself within its short outing period.
