Most filmmakers would truncate an ongoing film series as a result of bad critical reviews but the guys behind GI Joe could not care less about critical reception. The two GI Joe movies already released have been critically panned, however, the men behind turning the Hasbro-made action figures into films are not fazed but focused on growing the franchise to include more films. With the release of the first two GI Joe movies in 2009 and 2013 respectively, GI Joe 3 has long been announced to be in development. However, to be fair, it has not been all bad for the GI Joe movies as it has fared better at the box office. Both films managed to make about double their production budgets. Both made on a combined budget of $305 million, they have both grossed a combined $678 million at the global box office. Here are all the facts we know about the next installment in the franchise.

Is GI Joe 3 Coming Out, When Is The Release Date?

The next sequel of the GI Joe movies has long been referred to as GI Joe 3 since it was announced that development had begun on the project but will be titled GI Joe: Snake Eyes. As the name implies, it would be a spin-off on one of the GI Joe fictional characters known as Snake Eyes. Followers of Hasbro’s G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero would know that Snake Eyes is one of the most popular members of the GI Joe Team, a ninja commando, he is the original commando of the team. Snake Eyes is, of course, his code name and unlike other members of the GI Joe team, his history and information have remained classified from inception, however, with a spin-off to be released about him, chances are that more information about Snake Eyes Would be revealed.

GI Joe 3 would be telling the story of Snake Eyes, his journey to Japan for training and how he makes his way back to the team. The release date was initially scheduled for the 27th of March 2020, however, it was later pushed backward. As of this writing, the new release date for GI Joe 3 is the 16th of October 2020. The filming locations for the film would include Japan, Vancouver, and Los Angeles.

Production

A lot of changes have been made to the crew of GI Joe 3, however, the production companies remain the same (Skydance Media, di Bonaventura Pictures, Hasbro Studios, and Allspark Pictures). Greek-American screenwriter, Evan Spiliotopoulos has been hired as the screenwriter. Spiliotopoulos has quite an impressive resume with his works including The Huntsman: Winter’s War, Beauty, and The Beast and Lost Treasures.

The man behind the cameras as the director would be Robert Schwentke. Like Spiliotopoulos, Schwentke has a proven track record with his works including Insurgent and Allegiant – two films in the Divergent film series.

Cast 

Ray Park was the man behind the mask-wearing Snake Eyes character for the first two GI Joe movies, however, for GI Joe 3, a different person would be playing Snake Eyes. After his replacement was announced, Park took to Instagram to thank the franchise for the opportunity to play the role. However, he expressed interest in playing Snake Eyes in future GI Joe movies especially the future crossover with Transformers.

Ray Park’s replacement was revealed in August 2019 to be who is of English-Malaysian descent and is best known for his role as Nick Young in the 2018 American romantic comedy Crazy Rich Asians, and as Sean Townsend in another 2018 hit A Simple Favor. He earned a Teen Choice nod for his role in the former.

Golding’s character’s longtime nemesis Thomas Arashikage AKA Storm Shadow who works for the GI Joe Team rival Cobra would be portrayed by British actor, Andrew Koji. Though Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow are arch-rivals, the comic reveals that they are brothers.

Like Golding, Kojic has an impressive resume as well, he has under his belt appearances in television shows such as The Wrong Mans, Call the Midwife, and Warrior. After Snake Eyes hits theaters, the next GI Joe movie to be expected is G.I. Joe: Ever Vigilant whose release date is scheduled for 2020.
