It was released on October 2, 2015, and though we cannot exactly call it a box office hit, it was an outstanding commercial success which recorded enough numbers to be worthy of a sequel and, apparently Sicario 3.
The movie also got positive reviews with a Rotten Tomatoes rating of 92% from about 260 reviews averaging 8.05/10. On Metacritic, the film has an average approval rating of 82% based on 50 reviews. The second film in what would later be a trilogy was titled, Sicario: Day of the Soldado also called Sicario 2: Soldado. It was released in June 2018 following the success of the first film. Victor Garber and Benicio del Toro reprised their roles along with some other members of the cast of the first film but Emily Blunt was not seen in the film. It was later revealed that the cast was selected in that manner by the writer, Taylor Sheridan who said he wanted Sicario: Day of the Soldado to be more of a standalone film, that is, it would not be an exact continuation of the previous movie but they would be set in the same world. That also meant some characters from the previous film would be seen and some simply would not appear.
Furthermore, the storyline of Sicario: Day of the Soldado focuses on the United States – Mexican border drug war, with the U.S government trying to rouse the cartels. It starred other actors like Isabela Moner, Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, and Catherine Keener. The director of the first installment, Denis Villeneuve was also replaced by Stefano Sollima in this second.
Although the second release of the Sicario films recorded only an average rating on the Rotten Tomatoes site and only 61% on Metacritic, the movie grossed over $75 million worldwide against a $35 million dollar production budget. It also landed 3rd place in the U.S Box Office the weekend it was released.
Is There Going To Be A Sicario Day 3 After Day of Soldado?
When asked if there would be a third film, the film producer, Trent Luckinbill said fans of the franchise can expect Sicario 3. Luckinbill’s assertion was reiterated by Sicario: The Day of Soldado‘s Director, Stefano Sollima who said the third film is already in the making but he was unsure if he would be the director.
The writer of the other Sicario films, Taylor Sheridan later revealed that his busy schedule had not permitted him to write it, and apart from that, he would need a reason, issue or characters to explore. He also said the original idea was to create a trilogy that would be connected by only a few characters, and part of that idea is to put together a new crew for each of the films in order to get a different feel from the previous one. However as of now, a definite release date remains unknown to the public but from all that has been gathered, Sicario 3 should be expected any time from now.
