Though he is best known by his stage name “J Balvin”, this music superstar was born José Álvaro Osorio Balvin on May 7, 1985, to Alba Mery Balvin and José Álvaro Osorio. He was born in Medellín, Colombia. Balvin grew up listening to varying genres of music but he never took interest in making a career out of it. Fortunately, he visited the US as part of an English-exchange program and there, he got exposed to the business side of music.

Upon returning to his home country, he enrolled at EAFIT University to pursue a degree in international business. He equally launched his music career, performing at various local clubs under the stage moniker J Balvin “El Negocio”. He got signed to EMI Colombia in 2009 and the following year, he released his debut album Real. Under the same label, he released a second album El Negocio (2010) as well as a mixtape J Balvín Mix Tape (2012). In 2013, Balvin got signed to Capitol Latin, a subdivision of Universal Music Group and this opened up a whole new chapter in his career.

Balvin’s breakout single 6 AM, a collaboration with Puerto Rican singer Farruko, was released in February 2014 off his third studio album La Familia (2013). The song (6 AM) charted favourably on the Billboard charts and also drew massive international exposure for the singer. This was followed by the release of another chart-topping single “Ay Vamos” in July 2014. J Balvin’s fourth studio album Energía (2016) debuted atop the Billboard Top Latin Albums chart, boasting hit singles such as “Ginza”, “Bobo” and “Safari” (featuring , BIA and Sky). The album Energía cemented Balvin’s status in the international music scene and was ranked among the top 10 Latin Albums of 2016 by Rolling Stone magazine.
