J. Howard Marshall was born in the United States, in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia. He was also born on January 24, 1905.

Marshall went on to Haverford College for his undergraduate schooling, where he studied liberal arts and graduated in 1926.

Marshall played for the school football team, led the debate teams, and competed in tennis as a pupil of tennis great Bill Tilden while still at George School and Haverford.

He went to Yale Law School, where he earned a magna cum laude in 1931.
