After having shown signs of being the big-time player most people thought he would be in the National Football League in his rookie season, Kenny Golladay is set to go a step further to become a mainstay in the Detroit Lions’ offense.

The wide receiver, who is currently the third option for his team behind Marvin Jones Jr. and Golden Tate, put up decent numbers in his first season even though he was at the time the team’s fourth option, behind the now released Eric Ebron. Despite missing a number of games due to a hamstring injury, Golladay played 11 games, catching 28 passes for 477 yards and recorded 3 touchdowns. His presence made sure the Detroit Lions were the best deep-ball team in the league, making him a legitimate threat and giving him something to build upon in his career.

Biography

Kenny Golladay was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. As a child, he showed a passion for sports and was able to dominate his peers on the field, prompting his family to make sure he got the best training to be able to someday make it in the league. He went on to attend a local all-male Catholic school in Chicago, St. Rita of Cascia High School, which was famed for its somewhat decent sporting programs.

Golladay impressed at St. Rita and attracted scouts from different college programs across the country to watch him play. In 2011, his senior year, he caught 44 passes for 640 yards and managed 9 touchdowns. He was further named in the First-team Blue Division All-Catholic League honors. When the time came for him to attend college, he opted to attend the University of North Dakota. As a true freshman, he caught 30 passes for 429 yards, managing one touchdown. In his sophomore season, Golladay turned his game around, leading his team to a whopping 69 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns.

Despite having gained plaudits in the school, even getting named to honorable mention All-Big Sky Conference, Golladay decided to switch programs, transferring from North Dakota to Northern Illinois University (NIU). Due to NCAA transfer rules, the player had to sit out one season before he was able to make something out of his remaining college career.

As a junior, his first season with the NIU Huskies, Kenny Golladay played in all 14 games of the season with 13 starts. He finished the season with the most receiving yards by an NIU player in 15 years in a single season with 1,129 receiving yards on 73 catches and 10 touchdowns. For his efforts, he was named to the Second-Team All-MAC selection and placed on Biletnikoff Award Watch List.

In his final collegiate season, Golladay kept up his performances to make sure he was moving in an upward trajectory to this time earn a First-team All-MAC selection. For the first time in the school’s history, a player recorded back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons as Golladay managed 1,156 yards for 87 catches and eight touchdowns.

After graduating, Kenny Golladay attended the NFL Scouting Combine and also private workouts with a number of NFL teams. He was eventually selected in the third round with the 96th overall pick by the Detroit Lions in the 2017 NFL Draft. He signed a four-year, $3.19 million contract which included a signing bonus of $718,824 and the rest became history.
