American-born Hollywood star, James Denton has come to be well known for his notable credits in different aspects of the acting industry. He began his career on stage before eventually delving into film and television where he found even more success. The talented actor has featured in quite a number of movies in the course of his career but his biggest roles have been on the small screen. James Denton – Biography

James Thomas Denton Jr. was born on the 20th of January 1963 in the city of Nashville, Tennessee. His mother was Mary Jean Woolslair Denton and his father was J.T. Denton. He was raised alongside two siblings in the city of Goodlettsville, also in Tennessee. Growing up, his family was of the Southern Baptist Christian denomination and he eventually became a music minister at the Westmoreland United Methodist Church in Sumner City, Tennessee.

Denton had his high school education at Goodlettsville High School and for his college education, he attended the University of Tennessee where he bagged a degree in Advertising. He sold advertising for two radio stations before eventually venturing into acting at the age of 23. He landed his first acting gig was at a community theatre in Nashville. He later moved to Chicago where he performed with a number of theatre companies – The Griffin Theater and Strawdog Theater company. As a budding actor, he featured in a string of stage plays through which he gained prominence in the Chicago theatre scene.

Movies and TV Shows

James Denton ultimately became a full-time actor after he relocated to Los Angeles, California. He marked his screen debut in the thriller film Thieves Quartet (1993) and afterward, he appeared opposite in the short film Basic Football (1994) followed by a role in the action flick Hunter’s Moon (1995).

Denton guest-starred in several TV shows before eventually landing his first regular role in the action TV series The Pretender (1997-2000). He portrayed the character Mr. Lyle in three seasons of the hit series. The talented actor also reprised his role as Mr. Lyle in the TV films The Pretender 2001 (2001) and The Pretender: Island of the Haunted (2001).

While his TV credits soared, he also starred in movies like That Old Feeling (1997), Face/Off (1997) and Primary Colors (1998). At the turn of the century, he was a series regular in the TV shows Philly (2001-02) and Threat Matrix (2003-04) but they both did not last beyond their first seasons.

James Denton eventually got his career-defining role on the hit comedy soap opera Desperate Housewives (2004-2012) in which he portrayed one of the main characters Mike Delfino. His performance earned him a Teen Choice award for Best TV actor and he also shared multiple SAG Awards and nominations alongside other members of the Desperate Housewives cast. The talented actor guest-starred in other TV shows and also featured in movies like Beautiful Dreamer (2006), Undead or Alive: A Zombedy (2007), Tortured (2008), All-Star Superman (2011) and Karaoke Man (2012).

Denton landed another major TV role when he was cast as Dr. Sam Radford, one of the lead characters, in the comedy fantasy series Good Witch (2015-present). The show has been a hit since it premiered in February 2015 and it has been renewed severally. The actor equally played a recurring role as Peter Hudson in another comedy series Devious Maids (2016). Other recent acting credits include the made-for-TV movie For Love & Honor (2016) and the comedy flick Wake. (2018).

Prior to his current union, Denton was married to Jenna Lyn Ward, an actress. They tied the knot in 1997 but the union ended in divorce in 2000.
