James Milner is a professional footballer who plays for Liverpool Football Club and is noted for his versatility and all-around ability to play as either a winger, midfielder, or fullback. The Englishman’s commitment to the game has earned him praise from both his peers and managers; one of who described him as the most complete English player in the modern game.

Biography (Age)

Milner was born James Philip Milner on the 4th of January, 1986, in Wortley, Leeds where he was raised by his parents; mother Lesley, who worked as a real estate agent and father Peter who was a quantity surveyor.

While growing up, Milner was an excellent student who excelled in both his studies and sports, playing cricket, football and participating in long distance running. He attended Westbrook Lane Primary School before later attending Horsforth School where he graduated with 11 GCSEs and a physical education award for his excellent performance. During this time, Milner had already gotten the opportunity to join the Academy of Leeds United, his hometown club in which his parents were season ticket holders.

James Milner impressed all the coaches he played under at the academy and progressed through the club’s different age teams. Having already gained plaudits, it was a straightforward decision for Leeds to take the young player on as a trainee once he left school, although his father ensured that his son continued his education by attending college once a week.

At the young age of 16, Milner made his Leeds first-team debut in a Premier League fixture against West Ham United, becoming the second youngest player ever to play in the English top flight division. About a month later, Milner became the youngest player to score in the Premier League, a record which has since been broken. The young versatile player continued to put in notable performances which earned him comparisons with players like Wayne Rooney and Micheal Owen who began making a name for themselves as teenagers.

The Leeds United hierarchy rewarded James Milner with a new deal but loaned him out in the following season to gain further first-team experience. He spent a month with Swindon Town before returning back to his parent club who were going through both off-field and on-field difficulties. The team found itself relegated to the Championship and had to sell off all its big players due to financial constraints.

Milner was one of those players as he joined Newcastle United for a fee of around £3.6 million before the beginning of the 2004-05 season. He spent four years at Newcastle before he was sold to Aston Villa in August 2008 for a fee of around £12 million. His settling in the Birmingham based club was immediate as he had already played for them on loan from Newcastle in the 2005-06 season. In Milner’s second year at the club, he was named Aston Villa Fan’s Player of the Year and PFA Young Player of the Year. He attributed his success to the stability he had found under manager Martin O’Neill having previously played for thirteen different coaches in just 7 years.

After his PFA Young Player of the Year award-winning campaign, Milner moved to big money-spending Manchester City in a player plus cash deal that saw Stephen Ireland head to Villa along with a fee of £26 million. Milner spent five successful seasons with City, winning two Premier League titles, an FA Cup, FA Community Shield, and Football League Cup before moving to his current club, Liverpool, on a free transfer in June 2015.

James Milner’s Family – Wife

James Milner is married to his longtime girlfriend, Amy Fletcher, whom he met before he started his football career with Leeds United about two decades ago. The couple has remained inseparable ever since their paths crossed although not much is known about their relationship because Fletcher chooses to stay away from the limelight while her husband, who is known for his professionality, goes about his business on the field diligently.

Amy Fletcher has further been credited with being the brains behind The James Milner Foundation which she runs alongside her husband. The foundation focuses on promoting healthy recreation that benefits young people in the United Kingdom.
