Jason Whitlock is a sports journalist who has influenced journalism with his distinctive style of writing which includes classic and catchy words. He is a grounded journalist who has worked for ESPN, AOL Sports, Foxsport.com, Kansas City Star and several media houses. He co-hosts a daily programme, Speak for You on Fox Sport 1 with Colin Cowherd, who is also a journalist.
Whitlock is quite vocal about racism and one of the controversial statements he raised was the issue of black men dating white women. Jason Lee Whitlock was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on 27th April 1967 to James and Joyce Whitlock. Growing up wasn’t peaceful for him as his father was always gambling than being home with his family, as a result of this, his parents divorced after eight years of marriage. Jason has a brother who was named after their father – James.
He loved sports while growing up and was an active athlete throughout his teenage years. He attended Warren Central High School in Indianapolis where he actively participated in football. He was a very good offensive lineman and got a scholarship to Ball State University where he graduated with a degree in Journalism.
Jason started his career as a part-time journalist for The Herald-Times in Bloomington, Indiana, and then he moved on to The Charlotte Observer as a reporter for a year. He worked for Ann Arbor news in 1992 for two years and his assigned beat was the University of Michigan.
He would join Kansas City Star in 1994 and would win The Scripps Howard Foundation Award for journalism for commentary while with Kansas City Star on March 7, 2008. He became the first sportswriter to win $10,000 prize money from the award. However, he left on August 16, 2010. He joined ESPN online platform as a columnist and appeared on and hosted numerous ESPN TV programmes. In 2006, Jason departed from ESPN for AOL due to him being fired for some biting remarks he made about his colleagues during an interview.
Jason Whitlock has also worked for Fox Sports on their column starting from 2007. Jason later returned to join ESPN after an offer was made by John Skipper, the President of ESPN. His employment was, however, terminated at ESPN in October 2015, but prior to that time, he was the chief editor of the undefeated.com (a part of ESPN) but was also replaced by Leon Carter. He then moved to Fox Sport One as a co-host for Speak for Yourself. Jason is also a radio personality and has also published articles for Vibe, Playboy and The Sporting News
