Javier Baez is a professional baseball player who plays as an infielder for Major League Baseball side Chicago Cubs. Born in Puerto Rico, Baez had his high school education in Florida, United States and upon graduation, he was drafted by The Cubs in the first round of the 2011 MLB Draft with the ninth overall selection. He marked his major league debut in August 2014.

Javier Baez helped the Chicago Cubs clinch the 2016 National League Championship Series and was named as co-MVP of the tournament alongside Jon Lester. On the international front, Baez equally won the silver medal with the Puerto Rican national team at the 2017 World Baseball Classic.

Ednel Javier Báez was born on December 1, 1992, in Puerto Rico. He moved to Florida, USA at the age of 13 alongside his mother and siblings. Baez had his high school education at Arlington Country Day School (ACD) in Jacksonville, Florida.

At ACD, Baez’s talents were very much evident, however, the scouts doubted if he could become a star player. He was already billed to play college baseball at Jacksonville University before he got drafted by the Chicago Cubs in the 2011 First-Year Player Draft.

Career Stats

In his first season, Javier Baez played in the shortstop position for the Arizona Cubs, the Rookie-level Arizona League affiliate of the Chicago Cubs. In just 3 games with the Arizona Cubs, Baez recorded 3 hits, including 2 doubles in 12 at-bats and 2 stolen bases. He later advanced to the Boise Hawks of the Class A-Short Season Northwest League where he completed the 2011 season. During the following spring training, Baez participated in 26 games hitting 6 doubles, 3 triples, 8 home runs, with 28 RBIs, 11 stolen bases and 23 strikeouts in 94 plate appearances.

In 2012, Baez marked his regular season debut with the Peoria Chiefs of the Class A Midwest League earning himself a promotion to the Daytona Cubs of the Class A-Advanced Florida State League (FSL). He was eventually called up to The Cubs major league team during the spring training of the 2013 season finishing the spring training with a .298 batting average and 10 RBIs. Báez later returned to the Daytona Cubs at the start of the 2013 season. On June 10, 2013, he became the second player in the history of the FSL to hit 4 home runs in a single game. He was later promoted to the Tennessee Smokies of the Southern League where he concluded the 2013 season. Javier Báez was named as the Cubs Minor League Player of the Year and also named in the All-Star teams of the FSL and Southern League.

This bloke played the 2014 season with the Iowa Cubs, however, his performance was marred by series of injuries. He was eventually called up to the major league on August 5, 2014, and he recorded his first career home run on his debut against the Colorado Rockies. He played 52 games with the Cubs in 2014 recording a .169 batting average, 9 home runs with 5 stolen bases, 95 strikeouts, and 20 RBIs.

He rejoined the Iowa Cubs on March 30, 2015, however, his playing time was reduced following the loss of his sister and an injury. He was called up again to the Chicago Cubs in September 2015 where he helped the team advance to the National League Championship Series. Baez equally continued in his top form into the 2016 season where he also helped them advance to the 2016 National League Championship Series. He hit .318 with five RBIs, four doubles, and two stolen bases as the Cubs became the 2016 National League Champions and also went on to clinch the 2016 World Series Championship.

In the 2017 season, Javier Baez hit a .273 average, 23 home runs, 24 doubles, 75 RBIs, 75 runs scored, and 10 stolen bases. In addition to his flourishing MLB career, Baez has also been successful with the baseball team of his home country. He clinched the silver medal with the Puerto Rican national team at the 2017 World Baseball Classic, finishing the tournament with a .296 batting average, one home run, 5 RBIs, and an unprecedented 4 stolen bases.

 

His Family and Sister

Javier Baez was raised alongside his sister Noely and brothers Gadiel and Rolando. Baez and his brothers were introduced to baseball by their father Ángel Luis Báez. However, their father passed on when Javier was just 11 years old. In 2005, Baez’s mother relocated to the United States with the rest of the family.

The move was in order to seek better medical care for Javier’s sister Noely who was born with spina bifida condition. Before relocating to the US, the family visited the US as much as 4 times each year for Noely Baez’s treatments. Unfortunately, in April 2015, Noely passed away at the age of 21. Javier Baez has since set up and held several fundraisers to create awareness about the condition.

Javier Báez may not be married at the moment but his days as a single man are definitely numbered. In January 2018, Baez and his longtime girlfriend, Irmarie Marquez announced that they were expecting their first child. On April 11, the couple revealed via Twitter that they had gotten engaged. They plan on tying the knot in their home country of Puerto Rico in December 2018, definitely a fairytale ending for the duo who have known each other since grade school.

According to the Cubs star, he got his first tattoo at the age of 16 and ever since there has been no turning back in his quest to acquire more body ink. At the age of 16, Javier Baez alongside his brothers got matching tattoos of the Major League Baseball’s logo. According to the MLB star, that tattoo represents their common love for the game of baseball. He also has tattoos of his late father’s nickname, his mothers’ name, that of his brothers, his late sister’s face and so many others. Javier Baez also has a huge tattoo on his left deltoid dedicated to the Cubs’ 2016 World Series Championship title.
