Alves, Joo Maria Lobo Palhinha Gonçalves (born 9 July 1995) is a Portuguese defensive midfielder who currently plays for Sporting CP and the Portugal national team.
He started his career at Sporting CP, making his first-team debut in 2017 and also having loan spells at Moreirense, Belenenses, and Braga. He became a starter after his return, winning the Primeira Liga in 2020–21.
In 2021, Palhinha made his full debut for Portugal. He was a member of the Euro 2020 team.

Palhinha, a Lisbon native, joined Sporting CP’s junior system in 2012 when she was 17 years old. On 3 February 2014, he made his professional debut with the B team, coming on as a late substitution for fellow youth graduate Iuri Medeiros in a 32 home win over Portimonense in the Segunda Liga; it was one of only two appearances that season.

Palhinha scored his first senior goal on April 4, 2015, in a 3-1 home victory over Leixes while still in the second level. He was loaned to Moreirense and Belenenses in the Primeira Liga from July 2015 to January 2017, making his league debut with the former in a 0-2 home loss to Arouca where he played 22 minutes from the bench, and netted for the first time with the latter against Vitória de Guimares (1-1 away draw, 90 minutes played).

Palhinha made his competitive debut with the first team on 21 January 2017 at the Estádio José Alvalade, beginning in a 22-all draw at Martimo. On the same day, he scored his first goals for them, scoring twice in a 4–2 away triumph over Oleiros in the Taça de Portugal.
Palhinha was loaned to Braga for the next two seasons. During his time with the club, he played in 76 competitive matches, contributing to a third-place finish in 2019–20 and scoring the game’s only goal against Benfica, the club’s first win against that opponent in 65 years.

Palhinha began the 2020–21 season training on his own while negotiating with Al Nassr and CSKA Moscow. He was eventually reintegrated into Sporting’s main squad and made 32 appearances for the champions, scoring a goal in a 2–0 home defeat of Paços de Ferreira; as a result, he was named to the Primeira Liga Team of the Year alongside five of his teammates.

Palhinha was a member of the Portuguese national teams at the under-18, under-19, and under-20 levels. For the first time, in March 2021, he was called up to the complete squad for 2022 FIFA World Cup qualifiers against Azerbaijan, Luxembourg, and Serbia. He earned his first cap against his first opponent, replacing Rben Neves late in Turin’s 1–0 triumph. In the same phase, he scored his first goal, completing the 3–1 away triumph over Luxembourg.

Palhinha played against France in the group stage (2–2) and Belgium in the round of 16 (1–0 loss) at UEFA Euro 2020.
