Growing up in Georgia as an army brat, Joelle Carter had a lot of aspirations and while becoming a Hollywood star might be part of her dreams at the time, she was very active in sports as a student. In fact, she attended college on an athletic scholarship but from the obvious, she later found out that sports weren’t her forte after all.

She ventured into the acting industry in 1992 but her first recorded screen appearance was in one episode of Law & Order aired in 1996. More than two decades down the career path she has chosen, Joelle Carter is an acclaimed actress, comedian, and producer. She has more than fifty film and TV credits to her name with more in the pipeline.

Joelle Carter’s Biography

The American and her family moved around a lot but most of her early days were spent in her birthplace – Thomasville, Georgia. She was born there on October 10, 1972, to Jimmy Carter (father) who was rendering his services in the U.S. Army at the time.

Due to the nature of his job, Jimmy took his family to different places in the United States. Joelle’s high school education took place in Albany, Georgia, after which she landed a full scholarship to study at Augusta State University. The honor was given to her as an athlete who was active in swimming and cross-country.

It’s not known when she graduated from college but her career as an actress started in 1992 and steamed up from the mid-90s. She has not rested on her oars since then as she keeps sweeping up roles across both TV shows and film.

Movies and TV Shows

Sequel to her small screen debut in Law & Order (1996), Joelle Carter took to the big screen with a minor role in The Horse Whisperer in 1998. The rest of the 1990s saw her make appearances in Just One Time (1998/1999) and Suits (1999). The year 2000 was kind to her as she did not just play one of her biggest film roles in High Fidelity, Joelle also appeared in It Had to Be You as Claire Parker, Swimming as Josee and Lisa Picard Is Famous as Brenda. She played a brief role in American Pie 2 in 2001 and put the rest of the 2000s to good use with major and minor parts in films like Crazy Little Thing (2002), Justice (2003), When Will I Be Loved (2004), Nick and Stacey (2005), Room 314 (2006), Remarkable Power (2008), Cold Storage (2009), and others.

She started the 2010s with an appearance as herself in To Be Friends (2010) followed by her role as Jamie Furkes in Lost Angeles (2012). In 2013, Joelle Carter had three film projects – It’s Not You, It’s Me as Carrie, Red Wing as Vera Sexton and A Perfect Man as Lyn. In 2014 and 2015, the actress played relevant roles in The Living as Angela, Jessabelle as Katie Laurent and The Week as Lenny Wright. Her most recent film role was played in She’s in Portland in 2019.

In the TV department, Joelle Carter has also played numerous roles, some of which were major characters. Her first main role was in Wonderland as Heather Miles where she appeared in 6 episodes in 2000. She made one episode appearance in several TV projects including The Job (2002), The Jury (2004), Inconceivable (2005), Justice (2006), Monk (2009), and Three Rivers (2009), after which she bagged a major part in Justified. Her role as Ava Crowder in the crime drama series lingered for 78 episodes and received much acclaim, as well as a nomination at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards in 2015.

Her other TV roles can be traced to Choke.Kick.Girl: The Series (2011, 3 episodes), Body of Proof (2001, 1 episode), Grey’s Anatomy (2011), Castle (2013), Scandal (2016), Chicago P.D. (2016), Chicago Justice (2017 main role) and The Rookie (2018), among several others. She is currently playing the role of Sunny Daniels in Salvage which is still in the pre-production stage.

Family Life of Joelle Carter

As aforementioned, Joelle Carter grew up as an army brat, raised by her parents. However, asides her father who has been identified as Jimmy Carter, no identity has been pinned on her mother yet.

She has now built her own family with Andy Bates. The couple lives in New York City. Her husband is an editor, producer, and cinematographer; together, they started a film production company named Blarma. In 2010, their family grew with the arrival of a daughter named Luna Rose Bates.
