American professional football defensive end Joey Bosa hails from a family with a rich footballing history. Both his father and uncle were recognized football stars. As a kid, Joey began playing football with his younger brother Nick Bosa and both played to the college level in Ohio State. Joseph Anthony Bosa was born on July 11, 1995, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida where he attended the St. Thomas Aquinas High School. He was born to parents John and Cheryl Bosa. His father John played college football for Boston College as a defensive tackle before being selected in the first round, 16th overall by the Miami Dolphins in the 1987 NFL Draft.

With a former NFL star as his father, Joey was equipped with all he needed to stage an outstanding high school football career. He was named a 4-star recruit by rivals.com. Many colleges came calling for his talent and Bosa chose Ohio State University, his mother’s alma mater and the place where his uncle Eric Kumerow shined as a star linebacker from 1984 to 1987.

Bosa started for his varsity team as a freshman in 2013. Sporting News and College Football News would later name him to the freshman All-American team. He earned a number of other national and conference honors including a First Team Freshman All-American and Freshman All-Big Ten First Team, Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year, Big Ten Lineman of the Year and more. After his junior year, Bosa forwent his last year of college eligibility to enter the 2016 NFL draft where he was selected in the first round, third overall pick by the San Diego Chargers (now Los Angeles Charges following their 2017 relocation).

A hamstring injury in his rookie season meant limited playing time for Bosa, however, for the times he did play, Bosa did well to make it count. In October 2016, he was named the Defensive Rookie of the Month and by the end of the season, he was named the NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year. In his sophomore season, he continued to improve his game and was named to his first Pro Bowl by the end of the season.

Joey Bosa after being drafted became the last to be signed in his class due to contractual disputes with the Chargers. The disputes were finally settled in August 2016 when the Chargers revealed via a press release that Bosa was signed to a deal that gave him an initial signing bonus of over $17 million, the highest received by any rookie in the past two previous NFL drafts.

 

Bosa penned a four-year deal worth over $25.8 million with all of the money guaranteed and an average annual salary of about $6.5 million. His base salary in 2018 was calculated at $630,000.
