While he was in elementary school, he developed a fascination with South America’s natural landscape and nursed a dream of one day going to explore the terrains and search for treasures. Easterling studied environmental sciences at the University of North Carolina, earning a degree in 1976.

After his graduation, he applied for the Peace Corps and was posted to the West African country, Ivory Coast, but ultimately left for South America, in search of adventure. Soon after, he burned through his money and started trading in locally made sweaters and scarfs, rare minerals, stones from the Andes, and tribal artwork, supplying them to the States. With enough fund for a second trip, John Easterling returned to the continent.

On his second voyage, it took him about three years to get into his first real excavation. He found some Columbian pre-art works and textiles which were later sold to museums and collectors. Afterward, he got into gemstones in Brazil and Uruguay, importing about fifty-five-gallon drums of crystal balls and other materials, supplying most of psychics and seers in the States with those.

His epic adventure hit a roadblock in 1980 when he had a near-death experience with liver infection, hepatitis, and Rocky Mountain spotted fever. After recovery, chronic fatigue syndrome which was consequent of his impaired liver and deteriorated physical and mental health made traveling difficult. Nevertheless, he continued to do what he loved. He started going into the Amazon Basin where he worked with various local Indians gathering things like tribal artifacts and ceramics. He would soon discover what the real treasure was.

In one of his expeditions in 1990, John Easterling fell ill while riding a motor canoe along a stream. Fully exhausted, he managed to reach a small village where he collapsed upon arrival. The native Shipibo Indians living there nursed him back to health by serving him a mix of healing herbal tea among other things. His condition improved significantly with its regular intake, in turn, his chronic physical discomfort and mental tiredness diminished to a considerable extent. Then, the realization dawned on him that the real Amazon treasure was those precious herbs.

Afterward, he met and became acquainted with a scientist, Dr. Nicole Maxwell, who has been researching the Amazon medicinal herbs for over forty years. Together, they founded the Amazon Herb Company, with its headquarters in Jupiter, Florida, in 1990. It also owns plantations in the Amazon region and deals in the production and marketing of herbs, and herbs based cosmetics and products. He then became known as Amazon John. In 2012, the company merged with an international wellness company, TriVita which is based in Arizona.
