Jon Voight is an American actor whose rise to fame began in the 1960s when he made appearances in many movies such as Hour of the Gun, Midnight Cowboy, Out of It, among many others. While his personal success has always spoken for him, he is also the father of and James Haven, although his relationship with the former has always been on the rough path.

Jon Voight Biography

It was on December 29, 1938, in Yonkers, New York that the actor was born as Jonathan Vincent Voight to a father who was a professional golfer (Elmer Voight) and Barbara Voight (mother). He was raised alongside two siblings, Chip Taylor who is a singer and songwriter and Barry Voight – a geologist, volcanologist, and an author.

Of Slovak and German descent, he attended the Archbishop Stepinac High School in New York, and it was there that he first started acting in school plays. From there, he moved on to obtain a degree in arts from The Catholic University of America.

With his eyes already set on becoming a professional actor, Jon Voight was off to New York as soon as he graduated to pursue an acting career. He got his first role in Gunsmoke when he was given a spot in some episodes of the show in 1963. In that same year, he got roles in Naked City and The Defenders. He has also acted in other TV shows such as Pope John Paul II (2005), 24: Redemption (2008), 24 (2009), Lone Star (2010), and Rat Donovan (2013-).

Apart from the TV, he has become more in movies than anywhere else. His first movie was in 1967 when he played a role in Fearless Frank and the Hour of the Gun in the same year. In 1967, he acted in Midnight Cowboy and Out of It.

In 2001, he acted as Franklin D. Roosevelt in Pearl Harbor, and as George Washington in the 2008 movie, An American Carol. His most recent appearances are in the Same Kind of Different as Me (2017), Surviving the Wild (2018), and Roe v. Wade (2019).

With over 80 movies and films to his name as well as a career in the theatre, Voight has won many awards including BAFTA Awards, Golden Globe Awards, Academy Awards, Cannes Film Festival, and Los Angeles Film Critics Association award. He has received even more nominations.

In 1962, the actor got married to Lauri Peters whom he met when they were both working on the Broadway production of The Sound of Music. However, the marriage was only to last for five years before it finally came to an end in 1967. The next woman that became his wife was another actress, Marcheline Bertrand whom he married in 1971. Although they had two children between them, James Haven and Angelina Jolie, the marriage ended in a divorce in 1978 after a separation in 1976 when Jolie was only a year old.

The relationship between Jon Voight and remained rocky since he left the family when he did. Many years later when she would be accused of causing the divorce between Brad Pitt and , she said it would be an unforgivable thing for her to have an affair with a married man, considering that her father cheated on her mother.

Although it will be easy for one to assume that it was the success of her Voight that drove Angelina into acting, it was not. As a child, she spent a lot of time watching movies with her mother, building up the interest for her to have a career in acting.

After many years of their estranged relationship, Voight and his daughter reconciled in 2001 when they appeared in Lara Croft: Tomb Raider, but that would soon deteriorate, forcing the actress to request that the name Voight be taken off her name legally which was granted in 2002. In its place, she took her middle name which she had always used professionally.

Following the death of Marcheline Bertrand in 2007, Jon Voight and Angelina Jolie finally mended their fences.
