One fact that many would be surprised by is, Julianne Moore was actually born Julie Anne Smith. That was her birth name when she was born on the 3rd of December, 1960 on an army base in North Carolina, specifically Fort Bragg, to parents Peter Moore Smith and Anne Smith. Her Scottish roots, which manifests in her iconic red hair, is from her mother who is of Scottish descent.

Julianne Moore’s acting style has been described as one that consistently connects to the human condition and Moore herself has acknowledged her preference for roles that show human vulnerability. Her preference might be a result of her experience as a child, traveling across the country, experiencing the lives of different people, a benefit of her father’s work as a military judge. Some of the places she lived in include Georgia, Alaska, Panama, New York, Alabama.

Her academic prowess initially pointed towards a life as a medical doctor, but her hobby as an avid reader drove her into acting. Through the desire to see characters in her favorite books come to life, she joined the theatre in her school, Frankfurt American High School and appeared in several plays. Her ability as an actress in these plays drove her English teacher to advise her to pursue a career in acting. She went on to study Theatre at Boston University, graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1983.

With names like Julie Smith and Julie Anne Smith already registered, she was forced to adopt a new name, eventually settling for Julianne Moore. She started her professional acting life in 1985 on Off-Broadway before she appeared on screen for the first time in the very same year in a television show, The Edge of Night. She did not have to wait very long for her big break as she got it the following year in As the World Turns. She played dual roles on the show and won her first major award as a result, winning a Daytime Emmy Award.

Julianne had her first feature-length film appearance in Tales from the Darkside: The Movie, a 1990 horror film. She starred in a couple of films in the early 90s before she got her real big-screen breakthrough Short Cuts, a 1993 film. In the next two years after Short Cuts release, she appeared in Vanya on 42nd Street and Safe. All three films helped solidify Julianne’s reputation as a formidable actress, a reputation that has remained till this day.

Since then, she has appeared several films and television shows, winning multiple awards in the process. She is currently one of the most nominated and awarded actresses in the industry. She has also won the impressive feat of winning the Best Actress Award at the three major film festivals, becoming the second woman and fourth person in history to achieve the feat.
