Early Life and Career

Julio Urias was born Julio Cesar Urias Acosta to Juana Isabell and Carlos Urias on the 12th of August, 1996, in Culiacan, Mexico. According to his parents, Urias has almost always been the youngest and most talented player on any field he found himself playing on while growing up, after having learned how to play the game with his father right from the time he was a toddler.

So impressive was Urias’ talent that by the age of 10, he began joining the Mexico national team on road trips before he later started playing with them. By the time he was 14, he met the legendary Los Angeles Dodgers Scout Mike Brito, who had been hearing good things about his talent. Brito and the Dodgers kept an eye out for Urias who continued to perfect his game by playing for the Diablos Rojos del Mexico of the Mexican League. The Dodgers waited until Urias turned 16 on the 12th of August, 2012 before they signed him.

After agreeing to join the Los Angeles based team, Julio Urias was assigned to the Great Lakes Loons in the Midwest League. Despite making his professional debut almost a year after signing papers, on the 25th of May, 2013, Urias was still able to become the youngest player in the league. He celebrated his first game by striking out six batters over three shutout innings. After a year with the Loons, Urias was assigned to the Rancho Cucamonga Quakes of the California League where his performances earned him the Dodgers’ Minor League Pitcher of the Year award as he also earned a selection to play at the 2014 All-Star Futures Game for the World team.

Following his impressive showings, the Dodgers invited Urias to attend its major league spring training camp ahead of the 2015 season. Urias was, however, the first to be cut from the roster as he was assigned to the AA Tulsa Drillers of the Texas League. After a few months, he was promoted to the AAA Oklahoma City Dodgers after which he now finally secured a spot in the Dodgers’ roster ahead of the 2016 season.
