Music for Kehlani is a platform via which she can pour out her life experiences. If you ask the American singer and songwriter to talk about herself, it is probable that she would refer you to her songs. According to her, her music revolves around the ups and downs of her existence.

However, music was not Kehlani’s first love. She was initially a big fan of ballet and was hoping to make a career out of it. Though Kehlani was pretty famous because of her activities with Poplyfe, she didn’t get to attract any meaningful attention for her music career until she parted with the Oakland band and dropped her Cloud 19 debut mixtape in 2014. Though several assumptions have been made about Kehlani’s departure from Poplyfe with many upholding that she left because of what Piers Morgan, a judge for the AGT competition told her – that she doesn’t need the band – the musician that she left Poplyfe because of contractual problems and mistreatment from the management of the band.

The R&B star passed through challenging and difficult phases before she eventually grabbed a fine spot for herself in the music industry thanks to her first mixtape which received abundant positive review and earned the attention of those who matter in the business. Since then, she has been nominated twice for a Grammy Award. First was in 2016 under the Best Urban Contemporary Album. It was her second mixtape – You Should Be Here – that earned her the nomination. In 2018, she was again nominated for the award. This time, it was for Best R&B performance. Distraction, a song on her 2017 debut album got her the nomination.

Disregarding those, the musician can still brag about receiving other prestigious nominations. For instance, she was nominated in 2017 for BET and American Music Awards. For the later, the nomination was for Best Female Soul/R&B Artist and Centric Award. The former was for Best Female R&B/Pop Artist.

Born as Kehlani Ashley Parrish on the 24th day of April 1995 in Oakland, California, the musician is proud of her heritage which to her, includes a fine mixture of ethnicities like Filipino, Spanish, Caucasian, Native American and African American.

Kehlani had several reasons to be pissed with the world when she was growing up. First, her father died when she was still young and then, her mother was bedevilled by drug addiction. Young Kehlani had to be brought up by her aunt. She would later express that she was disconnected with the whole set-up as she couldn’t understand how a woman who has been a mom to her, isn’t her mom.

As a teenager, Kehlani was a student of the Oakland School for the Arts. She was working towards building a career as a ballet dancer at the school before she had a knee injury that shifted her attention to music. Eventually, she was invited to join PopLyfe and the band became her second family.

When Kehlani parted with PopLyfe living was pretty much tough for her. While she couldn’t sing because of the issues she was having with the managers of PopLyfe, she didn’t have a roof over her head. Apart from being homeless, the musician had to steal from stores for sustenance.
