Kim was born in Athens, Georgia on December 8, 1953, as the third of five children born to Ann Lee and Donald Wade Basinger who were both entertainers in their time. Ann was a model, dancer, actress and swimmer who featured in a lot of films at that time while her husband Donald was a musician, loan manager and former US soldier. Kim Basinger has two brothers, James Michael and Skip and two sisters Ashley and Barbara. Their ancestry includes a mix of English, German, Swedish, and Scots-Irish.

Growing up, Kim who described herself as an extremely shy kid and young adult studied ballet from a tender age of 3 till her mid-teens at which time she had become less shy and more confident about herself. She later joined her school’s cheerleading team and at the same time, competing in America’s Junior Miss Scholarship Pageant which she won at the city level and was crowned Miss Athens Junior. She ended up not winning this competition at the state level, however, but it was enough to give her a statewide publicity.

She married Ron Snyder-Britton on October 12, 1980, who she met while working on the film Hard Country. The two, however, separated in November 1988 when Kim Basinger left to date Jon Peters. With Jon, they lasted a couple of months and parted ways by December 1989. She briefly dated and had an affair with Richard Gere (while filming No Mercy, 1986) as claimed by her first partner Synder in his memoir Longer Than Forever

She married her second husband on August 19, 1993, after acting the movie The Marrying Man where they acted as lovers to each other. The two were together until February 3, 2002, before they finalized their divorce. In the course of their union, Kim Basinger bore their daughter Ireland Eliesse Baldwin on 23rd October 1995.
