Kurt Coleman is an NFL player that plays as a safety for the New Orleans Saints of the league. He previously played for the Philadelphia Eagles which selected him 244th overall in the 7th round of the 2010 NFL Draft. He had also played for the Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs, and Carolina Panthers. Before then, he played college football at Ohio State.

Kurt Coleman – Bio

Coleman was born in Dayton, Ohio on the 1st of July 1988 to Heidi Williams and Ron Coleman. His father served as an assistant principal at Walter E. Stebbins High School, Riverside, Ohio, before taking up a job as a health teacher at Mad River Middle School.

He attended Northmont High School, Clayton, Ohio, from where he graduated in 2006. Kurt played football in high school and was the 14th best cornerback in 2006 by Scout.com.

After high school, he played college football at Ohio State. During one of the spring practices, he tackled wide receiver Tyson Gentry and left him almost paralyzed and needing hospital attention. Kurt almost quit football because of that incident but Tyson would later forgive him during a visit to the hospital where he was receiving treatments.

Coleman finished his senior season at Ohio with sixty-eight tackles, 5 interceptions, and 3 forced fumbles. He earned Sporting News’ first-team All-American honors and first-team All-Big Ten honors.

NFL Career

He began his NFL career with the Philadelphia Eagles who selected him in the 7th round (244th overall) of the 2010 NFL Draft. He became the eighteenth safety to be drafted in the league that year and Eagles’ second safety that year.

In June of the same year, he signed a 4-year contract with the franchise worth $1.83 million, the contract included a signing bonus of $43,400. At the training camp, Kurt Coleman competed for Marlin Jackson’s position as the starting free safety after the latter suffered an Achilles tendon rupture.

After the game against the New York Jets where Kurt recorded 5 combined touchdowns, 2 fumbles recoveries for touchdowns, coach Andy Reid chose him as the backup safety that will begin the regular season. His first appearance for the regular season was in the game against the Green Bay Packers where he recorded 2 solo tackles in their 27–20 loss.

He would end his rookie season with thirty-six combined tackles (which included thirty -one solo), 2 pass deflections, and one interception in fifteen games in which he started two. His second season ended with seventy-eight combined tackles (with fifty-six solo), 5 pass deflections, and 4 interceptions in 15 games in which he started thirteen.

In 2012, he played fourteen games and started all of them. His records that season was ninety-three combined tackles, 4 pass deflections, 1 forced fumble. Coleman remained with the Eagles until the end of 2014, when he became a free agent and began attending private visits with different teams including New York Jets, Indianapolis Colts, and the Minnesota Vikings.

In April 2014, he received a contract offer from the Minnesota Vikings and after weighing his options he signed a 1-year contract with the franchise worth $900,000. His stay with the team was however brief as they released him in August of the same year as a part of their final roster cuts.

The following month, he landed another contract deal, this time with the Kansas City Chiefs. The one year contract was worth $730,000. He ended his 2014 season which was, unfortunately, his only season with the Kansas City Chiefs with a total of thirty-seven combined tackles (thirty-four solo), 6 pass deflections, 3 interceptions, and one forced fumble in fifteen games of which he started 3.

He became an unrestricted free agent after his one year contract with the Chiefs ended and in March 2016, Kurt Coleman signed a 2-year contract with the Carolina Panthers for $2.80 million with $600,000 as guaranteed money. Panthers head coach, Ron Rivera would later announce him as the starting free safety to begin the regular season.

He ended his first season with the Panthers appearing in fifteen games which he started all and recorded ninety combined tackles, which included fifty-five solos, nine pass deflections, a touchdown, a sack and a career-high seven interceptions. That same season, the Pro Football Focus named him the 7th highest overall grade among all safeties.

In 2016, he signed a 3-year contract extension with the Panthers. The contract was worth $17 million and included $7 million guaranteed money. The Pro Football Focus ranked him 41st among 90 NFL safeties that qualified in 2016 after he made an overall grade of 79.2. With an overall grade of 47.0, the Pro- Football Focus ranked 76th best among all qualified safeties in 2017. He also ended that season starting twelve games with seventy-six (76).

The Panthers released him in February 2018 and in March, he signed a 3-year contract with the New Orleans Saints. The contract was worth $16.35 million and came with $6.20 million as guaranteed money and a signing bonus of $4.50 million.
