Kyla Ross is a US gold and silver medalist and former elite Olympic gymnast. She has always been known to break old records and set new ones with her performance. At the beginning of her career, Kyla’s coaches were not sure she would become remarkable because she had shorter legs and square torso.

Kyla somehow impressed her coaches with her passion and dedication for the game. Today, her name is synonymous with words like gold medalist, phenomenal gymnast and the list goes on. She is presently an artistic gymnast and continues to defy all odds in the game.

Kyla Ross was born on October 24, 1996, in Honolulu, Hawaii to her lovely parents Jason and Kiana Ross. She has two younger siblings; Kayne Ross and Mckenna Ross. Kyla ancestry is mixed as her father is of Japenese and African-American descent while her mother is a mix of Puerto Rican and Filipino ancestry. She attended Aliso Niguel High School in Aliso Viejo, California and graduated in 2015. While growing up, she was no ordinary child. According to her parents, Kyla was born with triceps, already formed quads, she looked like she’d been working out in her mother’s womb. She would climb to the top of a jungle gym and do stunts that kids her age wouldn’t dare imagine or even try.

Career Beginnings

Kyla Ross began taking gymnastics classes when she turned three at the Greenville Gymnastics training centre in Greenville, South Carolina. Her choice of career caused her to move to Richmond Olympiad in Virginia, National Gymnastics Training Center in Aliso Viejo as well as Gym-Max Gymnastics in Costa Mesa, California. Her early career beginning made her enjoy early success. She won five state titles and two national titles in a short space of two years – between 2005 to 2007. At the Junior Olympic National Championship held in 2008, she took second place after winning the balance beam, floor exercise.

 

In 2009, at the Cover Girl Classic in Des Moines Iowa, she came first in all around by scoring 57.000. In August of the same year, at the Visa Championship in Texas, she came first place in the all-around, beating another phenomenal gymnast, Bridgette Caquatto with a two-day combined score of 114.000, her winning point was more than half of Bridgette’s. Kyla also placed first on vault, performing a double twisting scoring 29.00. In March 2010, at the City of Jesolo Trophy in Jesolo, Italy, she ended the game with second place in the all-around with a score of 56.700. In April 2010, at the Pacific Rim Gymnastics Championships in Melbourne, Australia, she won a gold medal on vault scoring 15.100 and a silver medal in uneven bars, scoring 14.250 and floor exercise scoring 14.200.

Kyla came third place at the Cover Girl Classic in Chicago in the all-around scoring 58.700 first on balance beam scoring 15.250, fourth on vault scoring 15.200 and uneven bars 14.550. In September 2010, she was again competing at the Pan American Championships in Guadalajara, Mexico and came first in all-around, scoring 57.998 and won the silver medal on floor scoring 14.075. Still, in the same game, Kyla and her teammates known as the Fierce Five won silver medals with close to 20 points. Kyla competed in the 2012 Olympics in London with her team and won a gold medal.

Parents

As mentioned earlier, her parents are Jason Ross and Kiana Ross and both of them are multi-racial. Her father, Jason, has African American and Japanese heritage and her mother is of Filipino and Puerto-Rican descent which makes Kyla Ross multi-racial by all standards. Kyla Ross retired from Elite gymnastics in 2016 and is now in collegiate gymnastics at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) where she is a student.

Kyla was a member of gymnastics team nicknamed, “Fierce Five”. Her teammates include; Jordy Wieber, McKayla Maroney, Gabby Douglas and . Kyla was the youngest and most talented among her teammates.

Kyla met her friend and fellow Fierce Five teammate, McKayla Maroney when she was six years old. The duo became very close because they shared similar ambitions of making history in gymnastics. Fast forward to a few years later and here they are, still together and making history.

Kyla, together with Japanese gymnast, Kohei Uchimura was awarded a prize for elegance. The award is mostly awarded by a panel’s vote and it is based on the elegance and show of talent of the gymnast. The award of elegance is mostly given to a boy and girl.

Kyla also made history with Madison Kocian by becoming the first Olympic gold medalist to compete as NCAA (National Collegiate Athletic Association) gymnast.
