The American TV actress, voice and film actress, Laurie Metcalf is widely known as Jackie Harris in the ABC sitcom Roseanne.

The beautiful actress who has been acting for four decades is a founding member of Chicago’s famed Steppenwolf Theater (along with John Malkovich and Gary Sinise). Among the popular movies and TV series she has appeared in include Toy Story, Fun with Dick and Jane, Uncle buck, and Desperately Seeking Susan among many others.

Born in Illinois in 1955 and raised in Edwardsville, Illinois alongside her two other siblings, Laurie grew up having an interest in stage performance but her aptitude for stage acting became apparent in her years at Illinois State University, where she obtained her bachelor of arts in theatre in 1977. Before accepting to major in Theatre, Laurie tried majoring in German – so she could be an interpreter and Anthropologist. Some popular celebrities in her class at the time include John Malkovich, Glenne Headly, and Joan Allen.

Laurie made her debut film in 1985’s Desperately Seeking Susan. Her father, James was a well-known budget director at Southern Illinois University-Edwardsville while her mother, Libby, was a librarian. Her two siblings are James Metcalf and Linda Metcalf

The once shy Laurie is now a major actress in the movies and TV series, earning a number of accolades, thanks to her skills. She began acting at Steppenwolf Theatre Company, where she became an original ensemble member and received a 1984 Obie Award for Best Actress for her performance in Balm in Gilead.

Laurie, so far, has up to three Emmy Awards and two Golden Globe award nominations. She also has a Tony Award and a Screen Actors Guild Award. Her first Tony Award nomination was in 2008 which was given to her for playing presidential speechwriter Clarice Bernstein in David Mamet’s play November.

In addition to her Emmy and Golden Globes awards and nomination, Laurie has also received a Drama League Award and Outer Critics Circle Awards among many others. Her most recent awards and nominations were from 2016 to 2018 where she received nominations as Outstanding Guest Actress in Drama Series. In the 2017 Oscar, Laurie was nominated for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role. The same year, she won the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play for her role in A Doll’s House Part 2.

Laurie’s Daughter, Husband

Laurie has been married twice. Her first marriage was from 1983-1992 to actor and co-founding member of Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Jeff Perry. They had a daughter named Zoe.

Zoe is a young actress best known for portraying Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon. She also has recurring roles in the thriller TV series The Family. She also played a younger version of her mom “Little Jackie,” in Roseanne. In 2013, she acted alongside her mother in the Broadway production of The Other Place.

 

Laurie’s next marriage was in 2005 Matt Roth, another American actor and co-star in the TV series Roseanne. They had three children namely Will Theron Roth, Mae Akins Roth and Donovan Roth. On November 26, 2008, Metcalf and Roth separated. Their divorce papers were finalised in May 2014. Laurie is currently with no husband and has no intention of having one anytime soon. She feels more comfortable with acting than anything else.
