Leslie Caron is a French veteran in the entertainment business. In addition to acting, Leslie is also a great dancer and she rose to prominence through her role in musicals. Some of the productions that got her popular include An American in ParisLili, Daddy Long Legs, and Gigi, all of which were performed in the early 1950s. Caron also has some non-musical credits to her name including The L-Shaped Room, Fanny and Father Goose. She was a diva during her heydays and though she’s long slowed in her activity she isn’t officially retired as she occasionally rises to answer to a gig whenever she can. The iconic actress upon her birth in Boulogne-sur-Seine, Seine on the first day of July 1931 was given the full name Leslie Claire Margaret Caron. She would grow up to take after her mother a certain Margaret Caron who was known for her work on Broadway. While Leslie followed her mom’s track, her older brother Aimery Caron chose to walk in their father’s footsteps to become a chemist.

With mommy to put her through the basics, Leslie Caron began her career as a ballet dancer. Her talent was exceptional as in a short time, she was discovered by Gene Kelly at a time when she was with the Roland Petit company, Ballet des Champs Elysees.

This discovery opened the doors to her acting career as she was cast in her first musical – An American in Paris in 1951. Her performance was good enough to attract attention from MGM who signed her to a multi-year contract as it were in those days. Her contract with MGM led her to appear in a number of films including the 1951 drama, The Man with a Cloak alongside and Joseph Cotten as well as the 1955 musical, The Glass Slipper.

For her big role in Lili (1953), she earned her first Oscar nod for Best Actress. Her role in 1962’s The L-Shaped Room brought her two accolades – a BAFTA win and Golden Globe for Best British Actress. She continued to excel through the ’60s with roles in Three Fables of LoveFather Goose, A Very Special Favor and Promise Her Anything. Her credit in the ’70s included MadronChandler, Surreal Estate, The Man Who Loved Women, Valentino, and All-Stars.

In 1984 Leslie Caron played Henia Liebskind in Dangerous Moves – a film about Chess which was directed by Richard Dembo. She also appeared in Courage Mountain in 1990 and played Katie Parker in Funny Bones in 1995 alongside Oliver Pratt and Jerry Lewis.

Her longevity in the industry was an impressive feat, at the turn of the century in 2000 she appeared in Chocolat alongside Judi Dench and Cleo Laine. Caron has appeared in many television series including many episodes of the soap opera, Falcon Crest portraying the role of Nicole Sauguet in the 1980s.

Leslie Caron got inducted into the Hollywood Walk of Fame in December 2009. She has received several honors, awards, and nominations. Some of which include Life Achievement Awards from School of American Ballet in 1996, Palm Springs International Film Festival 1996, the Sarasota Film Festival in 2005, and an honorary degree from the American University of Paris, among others.

Her Spouse

Leslie Caron’s first marriage was to George Hormel II in 1951, which ended in divorce in 1954. In 1956, she got married to theatre director Peter Hall, with whom she had two children, TV producer, Christopher John Hall born in 1957 and actress, Jennifer Hall born in 1958. However, after nine years of marriage, she and Hall divorced in 1965.

After their divorce, Caron’s next shot at marriage was with a film producer, Michael Laughlin in 1969. The two were together until 1980 when their union ended in a divorce. Between 1994 and 1995 the actress reportedly had a romantic relationship with TV actor Robert Wolders.

Is She Still Alive?

Leslie Caron is far from her prime and is only normal that she slows down on her activity. However, retirement doesn’t seem to be part of her plan as she occasionally features in gigs. The iconic French actress is very much alive and lives in London.
