Lupe Fiasco’s Bio (Age)

Lupe Fiasco was born Wasalu Muhammad Jaco on the 16th of February 1982 in Chicago, Illinois to his parent; Gregory and Shirley. Jaco and his 8 siblings grew up relatively poor living conditions in the Madison Terrace housing project. Jaco got his music side from his father, Gregory, who in addition to working as an operating plant engineer was a renowned drummer.

His parents divorced when he was 5 years old, after which Jaco who was raised as a Muslim would live with his mom. However, his father remained an active part of his life and he began living with him from the 6th grade in a gang-ridden neighborhood in Harvey, Illinois.

Also a karate grandmaster, Gregory exposed his son to karate classes from the time he was 3 years old and later taught him to handle a gun so he could defend himself from the gang members that plagued his neighborhood.

Jaco was encouraged by his parents to take academics seriously and he grew up reading encyclopedias and National Geographic magazines. He nurtured a passion for music from his early teens and began writing poems that he’d later turn into music. Though Lupe originally hated rap music for its use of vulgar words, he got inspiration to begin rapping after listening to the works of Nas.

Lupe Fiasco began making his own music from his father’s basement at the age of 18. Subsequently, he became part of a rap group Da Pak which was briefly signed to Epic Records. After the group split, he began working as a solo act and got a deal with Arista Records. He would be dropped from the label following the sack of L.A. Reid.

However, Fiasco had stayed on the label long enough to meet with who became a great admirer of his work. Jay Z helped him get a deal with Atlantic Records and the rest is history.
