Marcheline Bertrand – Biography

Marcheline Bertrand was born Marcia Lynne Bertrand on the 9th day of May 1950 in Blue Island, Illinois and raised in Riverdale. She was born as the first child of Lois June – who had Dutch and German roots – and her husband Rolland F. Bertrand (of French-Canadian descent). Bertrand had two younger siblings – Debbie and Raleigh.

Bertrand from the age of 15 began living in Beverly Hills, California, where her parents had relocated to. There, she attended and graduated from Beverly Hills High School. Bertrand’s acting career was short-lived beginning in 1971 when she trained with Lee Strasberg and ending in 1983 with the comedy The Man Who Loved Women.

Besides acting, Marcheline Bertrand also channeled her strength and resources towards humanitarian activities. She established All Tribes Foundation joining forces with her then-partner John Trudell, a Native American. The foundation is aimed at promoting the quality of life of Native tribes. Bertrand, like Trudell, has roots from the Native tribe Iroquois from her father’s lineage.

Also with Trudell, Bertrand founded Give Love Give Life organization, a cancer awareness organization. She was inspired to start the foundation after she was diagnosed with cancer in 1999. Unfortunately, she lost her bout with the disease in January 2007.

Family – Was She Married?

Marcheline Bertrand was married just once, her only husband being the father of her only two children, and James Haven. Bertrand got married to Jon Voight on the 12th day of December 1971, while it was Bertrand’s first marriage, it was Voight’s second.

The Oscar-winning actor had previously been married to actress Lauri Peters whom he met on set while they both acted in the original Broadway production of The Sound of Music. Voight’s union with Lauri Peters lasted for five years from 1962 to 1967.

Like in his first union, Voight’s happy years with Bertrand would also last for five years. They were separated in 1976 on grounds of adultery on Voight’s part. A year after their separation, Marcheline Bertrand filed for divorce from Voight in 1978 and in 1980, their divorce was made final.

On the 11th of May 1973, Marcheline Bertrand had her first child from her union. It was a boy named James Haven Voight. Two years later on the 4th of June 1975, they welcomed their daughter . Bertrand’s children came after she had previously suffered a miscarriage.

Due to her divorce from Jon Voight, Bertrand’s children were estranged from their father for over 5 years until 2007 when they reconciled after Bertrand’s passing. It was because of this estrangement that James dropped Voight from his surname. Their two children followed in their footsteps to become renowned names in the entertainment industry.

Her son, James Haven, fell in love with filmmaking in high school and a film he made starring his sister Angelina earned a George Lucas Award. Subsequently, he appeared in some more films with his sister, Angelina; they include Gia (1998) and Original Sin (2001). In 2009, two years after reconciling with his father Jon Voight, Bertrand’s son James Haven became a .

Bertrand’s daughter Angelina, on the other hand, would go on to become even more famous than her brother James. She completely took after her mother acting and dedicating a lot of her time to humanitarian activities. Thanks to her humanitarian activity and high star power, Jolie is regarded as one of the world’s most influential persons. She has undergone three divorces from husbands; Jonny Lee Miller, Billy Bob Thornton, and .

Through her daughter Jolie, Bertrand had 6 grandchildren. The last one, daughter Vivienne Marcheline Jolie-Pitt born on July 12, 2008, was given the middle name “Marcheline” in honor of her grandmother.

Though Marcheline Bertrand was never again married, she had relationships with two other men including documentary filmmaker, Bill Day whom she dated on-and-off from 1978 to 1989. At the time of her death, she had been in a longterm relationship with Native American musician, and political activist John Trudell.
