For fans of the Star Trek series, Deanna Troi is not a new face. She is the half-human, half-Betazoid character who was also the counselor on the Enterprise-D ship where she worked as a close ally to the ship captain, Jean-Luc Picard. That mind-reading telepathic humanoid role was excellently played by British-born American actress, Marina Sirtis.

Sirtis, who has featured in more TV shows than films, has been a part of all the Star Trek series and that is the role she is best known for today. Here is a detailed peek into the life and affairs of the actress.

Marina Sirtis’ Bio

Marina Sirtis parents John and Despina Sirtis welcomed her as she was delivered in a London hospital in Hackney, London on the 29th of March 1955. She was born into a middle-class home and to parents who were of the working class. Though born in Inner London, Marina Sirtis was raised in North London (Harringay district, to be precise), along with her younger brother, Steve Sirtis.

She picked up interest in the performing arts as a young girl and while she attended secondary school in Tottenham, she sought opportunities to pursue her dream of becoming an actress. This made her take the very bold step of secretly going to auditions for entrance into a drama academy – the Guildhall School of Music and Drama. She did well in those auditions and was accepted to study at the institution.

The now determined and vibrant aspiring actress proceeded to join a theater company after graduating from Guildhall in 1976. She worked with the Connaught Theatre based in West Sussex, England at the beginning of her acting career but would move to the United States much later – in 1986.

Career

Marina Sirtis’ first attempt at acting was when she worked with the Connaught Theatre in 1976. The theater was directed by Nic Young at the time and she was debuted on the stage play by English playwright Joe Orton titled What the Butler Saw. That was followed by a role as Ophelia in the play, Hamlet. Sirtis film debut came in the 1983 film The Wicked Lady and then Blind Date (1984) where she was cast as a prostitute who met her death at the hands of a madman and Death Wish 3 (1985) followed in quick succession.

It is worthy of note that before she got her first movie role, Marina Sirtis had made a headway in the small screen where she got her first credit in a 1977 series titled Raffles before going on to bag another appearance the same year in Who Pays the Ferryman. She got a guest role that suited her ancestry the following year when she starred as Melina Stassinopolus in Hazell (1978).

After 10 years in the English film industry at age 31, Marina Sirtis decided to branch out to the United States to seek out fresh challenges and perhaps give her career a much-needed upgrade. So she came to the US on a six months visa and that decision turned out to be the best one for her career as her first project in the country’s film industry, Hollywood was Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987.

After auditioning for a role (not that of Deanna Troi which she eventually played in the series), she went home waiting and expecting a call back which seemed like it was not coming. However, by a stroke of divine providence, as she was packing up her things to move back to the UK upon the expiration of her visa, Sirtis received a call back from the executive producer, Gene Roddenberry and was offered the role of Deanna Troi.

Marina Sirtis’ has appeared in other film and series including Heaven Help Us (1994), Gadgetman (1996), Diagnosis: Murder (1998), Stargate SG-1 (2000), Threat Matrix (2003), Grendel (2007), NCIS (2013), My Summer Prince (2016), among others.
