Most celebrities have been known to have a low life expectancy due to their lifestyle which may not always be healthy but the reverse is the case with renowned American actress Mary Tyler Moore whose life spanned between December 29, 1936 – January 25, 2017. Mary lived up to the ripe age of 80 and left her mark in the entertainment industry through the movies she acted, and her television series popularly known as Mary Tyler Moore Show.

Biography of Mary Tyler Moore

The renowned actress was born on the 29th day of December 1936 in Brooklyn, New York. She was welcomed into the family as the eldest child of a clerk – George Tyler Moore and his wife Marjorie Hackett. Mary’s Zodiac sign is Capricorn and she was brought up in Brooklyn along with her two siblings John and Elizabeth Moore but when she was eight years old, her family had to relocate to Los Angeles.

Mary’s educational qualifications were acquired from St. Rose of Lima Parochial School in Brooklyn where she reached up to grade three and later attended Saint Ambrose School in Los Angeles to complete her early education. After Saint Ambrose, she proceeded to Immaculate Heart High School in Los Feliz, California.

Mary’s career began with commercials, but she made her film debut in x-15. In 1961, her role in The Dick Van Dyke Show brought her to the limelight. She demonstrated her talent in domestic comedy in her role as Laura Petrie which won her an Emmy for her part in the series. She deviated from tv series to make a few movies like Change of Habit and Thoroughly Modern Millie but later, she returned to television to continue with the Mary Tyler Moore Show which proved even more captivating and audiences loved the character she portrayed. Mary created the series alongside her second husband Grant Tinker through their company MTM Ent. Her success in some of her acting endeavours won her a Tony Award for her performance of Whose Life Is It Anyway? on Broadway. That same year, her part in Ordinary People earned her an Academy Award nomination.

The renowned actress was born to George Tyler Moore and Marjorie Hackett mother. She was the eldest child of the Moore and was raised alongside her younger siblings – John (brother) and Elizabeth (sister). The Moore family is a devoted Catholic family and were residing on Ocean Parkway in the Flatbush section of Brooklyn earlier.

Lieutenant Colonel Lewis Tilghman Moore, Mary’s paternal grandfather owned the house in which they lived. Their house in Brooklyn has since been converted to Stonewall Jackson’s Headquarters Museum in Winchester, Virginia. Mary’s family moved to Los Angeles when she was eight years old at the recommendation of her uncle who was an MCA employee. It’s important to note that Mary’s sister Elizabeth died at the young age of 21 from a combination of alcohol and painkillers. And her brother John died from Kidney Cancer when he was 47 years old.

Mary has been married for three times and her last marriage lasted until the end of her life. When the actress was 18 years old in 1955, she got married to her first husband Richard Carleton Meeker. The fruit of that marriage, a son named Richard Jr was born in 1956 and the couple got divorced in 1961 after barely six years of matrimony. In 1962, just a year after the end of her first marriage, she tied the nuptials for the second time with Grant Tinker who worked as a CBS executive. This time, the marriage lasted for 19 years but eventually, in 1981, the couple got divorced.

Her last marriage which lasted until the end of her life was to Robert Levine. The couple got married on November 23, 1983, barely two years after the end of Mary’s second marriage. During her lifetime, Mary suffered the tragedy of the death of her only son Richard, who accidentally shot himself while he was handling sawed-off shotgun at the age of 24.

Early in the run of The Mary Tyler Moore Show, she was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes. She was also predisposed to alcoholism which she recorded in her first memoir but the immediate cause of her death was cardiopulmonary arrest resulting from pneumonia on 25th January 2017 at the ripe age of 80.

After she was diagnosed with diabetes, she picked interest in the American Diabetes Association where she devoted much of her time. The foundation known as the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF) made her their International Chairman and took advantage of her profile to raise funds and create awareness of diabetes mellitus type 1. The Forever Moore was created in 2007 by JDRF as a research initiative to support academic research and development which entails translating basic research advances into technologies and new treatments for those people who have type 1 Diabetes.
