His father, Hermann was also a while his mother, Ulla, was a sports journalist – little wonder then how he turned out to be such a fine soccer player. Hummels has a younger brother, Jonas Hummels, who also played soccer but retired due to a career-ending injury which he had while playing the game.

Hummels was keen on playing soccer and aspired to play in the forward position at a very young age. He joined the youth team of German club, FC Bayern Munich following his family’s relocation to Munich when he was six years old as his father got the job as the coach of the club’s youth team. He started with the team when he was fourteen and he was handled by his father but that did not accord him any preferential treatments as he had to put himself through a lot of hard work to merit his place in the team.

At times when he was not sharp in his form, he found himself on the bench as he watched others show him what the rewards to more hard work could be.
