Mayim Bialik has managed to find herself in this elite category of multi-talented individuals. She has been involved in voicing roles, web series, films, and television series. She is mostly known for her regular participation as the character, Amy Farrah Fowler – also a neuroscientist – on CBS’s ultra-successful series The Big Bang Theory. This role has earned her four nominations for the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Mayim Bialik’s Biography

The actress cum neuroscientist was born Mayim Chaya Bialik in San Diego, California, on December 12, 1975. Mayim, whose name means “water” has Polish, Czech, and Hungarian heritage and is Jewish. Her parents are Barry and Beverly Bialik.

She went to Walter Reed Middle School after which she went to North Hollywood High School. By this time, she was already a child actress and had appeared in 80s movies and tv roles such as Pumpkinhead, Webster, Blossom, Beauty and The Beast, and The Facts of Life.

After her high school education in 1995, she received admission offers from UCLA, Yale, and Harvard. A bit of back and forth ensued before she opted for The University of California because she did not want to be far away from her family. Her time in UCLA earned her a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience with minors in Hebrew and Jewish studies. Bialik went on a hiatus in 2005 to focus on her acting but returned to earn a Ph.D. in neuroscience in 2007.

Bialik’s last major role before 1995 was in Woody Allen’s 1994 comedy Don’t Drink The Water. She spent most of the next decade doing mostly voicing roles for cartoons such as Jonny Bravo, Kim Possible, Hey Arnold!, and Recess. She followed this up with guest appearances in series such as Saving Grace, Kalamazoo, and Fat Actress. Starting in 2008, she was the school’s guidance counselor in ABC’s The Secret Life of the American Teenager.

Mayim Bialik brought her academic interests with her when she was brought on as part of the cast of the ultra-successful The Big Bang Theory in the finale of its third season.
