Mayim Bialik’s Biography

The actress cum neuroscientist was born Mayim Chaya Bialik in San Diego, California, on December 12, 1975. Mayim, whose name means “water” has Polish, Czech, and Hungarian heritage and is Jewish. Her parents are Barry and Beverly Bialik.

She went to Walter Reed Middle School after which she went to North Hollywood High School. By this time, she was already a child actress and had appeared in 80s movies and tv roles such as Pumpkinhead, Webster, Blossom, Beauty and The Beast, and The Facts of Life.

After her high school education in 1995, she received admission offers from UCLA, Yale, and Harvard. A bit of back and forth ensued before she opted for The University of California because she did not want to be far away from her family. Her time in UCLA earned her a Bachelor of Science degree in neuroscience with minors in Hebrew and Jewish studies. Bialik went on a hiatus in 2005 to focus on her acting but returned to earn a Ph.D. in neuroscience in 2007.

Bialik’s last major role before 1995 was in Woody Allen’s 1994 comedy Don’t Drink The Water. She spent most of the next decade doing mostly voicing roles for cartoons such as Jonny Bravo, Kim Possible, Hey Arnold!, and Recess. She followed this up with guest appearances in series such as Saving Grace, Kalamazoo, and Fat Actress.
