Michelle Suzanne Dockery was born on December 15, 1981, in the Rush Green area of East London, England. Her parents are Lorraine (née Witton) and Michael Francis Dockery. She grew up alongside 2 older sisters, Louise and Joanne. She began her secondary school education at Chadwell Heath Academy, and later she moved to the Finch Stage School. Afterward, she studied at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama where she was honored with the Gold Medal for Drama when she graduated in 2004.

Michelle Dockery trained at the National Youth Theatre and there, she began her career as a stage actor. She got her first professional acting role in the 2004 stage production of His Dark Materials at the Royal National Theatre. This was followed by many other roles in stage plays across several theatres which earned her a couple of accolades. The talented actress marked her TV debut when she portrayed the character Betty in the BBC miniseries Fingersmith (2005).
