Nick Cave is known as Australia’s talented singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, writer, actor, and composer. His rise to fame was through his position as frontman of The Birthday Party band as well as another rock band called Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds.

Majority of his works as a screenwriter, singer and composer have been used in movies and tv shows which include; Batman Forever, Dogs in Space, The L Word, The Proposition, The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford, and many others.

Biography (Childhood)

The documentary 20,000 Days on Earth pictured Nick Cave’s childhood, hometown, and family. According to the semi-fiction film, he had a good childhood void of sexual abuse with loving parents but he has always been predispositioned towards violent thoughts which can be seen in his works. Born on 22 September 1957 in Warracknabeal, northwest Victoria, Australia to Colin Frank and Dawn Cave; the young lad spent most of his childhood in Warrackenbeal and Wangaratta and was part of the Wangaratta’s Holy Trinity Cathedral choir at age 9.

As a teenager, Cave was into heroin and he got expelled from school and was also once arrested for burglary. In 1970, his family moved to Melbourne where he attended Caulfield Grammar School. At 19, after his father died in an accident, he started studying painting at the Caulfield Institute of Technology but his desire to pursue a career in music caused him to drop out the following year.

Nick Cave’s interest in music started when he listened to Manfred Mann, Deep Purple and Free perform at Melbourne’s Festival Hall, which was the first music concert he ever attended. While at Caulfield Grammar school, he had co-founded a band with Mick Harvey, Phill Calvert, John Cochivera, Brett Purcell and Chris Coyne called The Boys Next Door. The bandmates were later reduced to four with Tracy Pew and Rowland S. Howard joining in 1978.

Songs by the group consisted of harsh pounding rock and lyrics that include Old Testament issues of damnation and debauchery. The Boys Next Door soon became famous for their provocative and energetic stage performances, as the band soon moved to London before also moving to West Berlin. Together with his then-girlfriend and muse, Anita Lane, who moved with them to London, they recorded famous singles “Nick the Stripper”, “King Ink” and “Release the Bats” until their break up in 1984.

Life Achievements and Timeline

After the separation of The Boys Next Door, Nick Cave founded a new rock band called Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, which has released sixteen studio albums till date. The band’s music centered around topics of religion, America, death, love, and violence.

Apart from his solo career that begun in the 1990s, Cave formed another band called Grinderman, which has released two albums; Grinderman (2007), and Grinderman 2 (2010). He has further guest appeared in Hollywood blockbusters and TV shows such as I Am Sam, The Road, Dias de Gracias, Lawless, Ghosts… of the Civil Dead and many others. He has also authored two books; King Ink (1988) and King Ink II (1987), and two novels; And the Ass Saw the Angel (1989) and The Death of Bunny Munro (2009).

Although he has always been all about his music, Nick Cave was not one to watch his life pass him by. The rockstar has had relationships with a number of women, starting with his muse Anita Lane, who he dated from the late 1970s to the mid-1980s.

His next relationship was in 1990 when he met and married Viviane Carneiro, a Brazilian journalist in São Paulo. The following year, the couple had a son named Luke Cave. Around this same time, the musician had another son, named Jethro Cave, that was born in Australia to Beau Lazenby. Jethro did not meet his father until he was seven or eight years old.

Despite the initial hopes of spending the rest of their lives together, Cave and Carneiro’s marriage only lasted for about 6 years before it ended in divorce in 1996.

Following his divorce, Cave met and married British model Susie Bick, in 1997. The couple married in 1999 and together they have twin boys named, Arthur and Earl Cave born in 2000 in Brighton. In 2015 one of the twins, Arthur fell off a cliff and died at Ovingdean near Brighton, England.
