Nicole Sullivan was born as Nicole Julianne Sullivan on April 21, 1970, in Manhattan, New York, in the United States and is the only child of her parents, Edward Christian Sullivan and Madonna Sullivan. She was raised in by their parents. Her father is a politician – a Democrat – who served as their district representative in the New York State Assembly for 25 years (between 1977 and 2002) while her mother is a career businesswoman. Her ancestry is a mixed one. She is of both Irish and German ancestry but being born the United States, she has the American nationality and belong to white ethnicity.

Nicole had a talent for arts and it was on display at a very early age. At age 7, she took dance classes and also performed in the Off-Broadway and Broadway theatre productions for children. She obtained her high school education from Middleburgh High School and graduated in 1987. Nicole was very active while in high school. She played football (soccer), followed the male basketball team as a stats recorder, sat as a member of the student council, served as treasurer for her class (in junior year), became class president among others things before pursuing a degree in Literary Arts (majoring in Theatre) in the Northwestern University, Illinois. She wrote plays for the student theatre group in school while studying Shakespeare, Henrik Ibsen, Harold Pinter, Anton Chekhov and Greek tragedies. She also attended the British American Drama Academy in London and became a member of the Greenwich Shakespeare Company before her graduation from college in 1991.
