Omri Casspi is a professional basketball player who is of Israeli ancestry. He is known for his ability to play both small forward as well the power forward position when he is needed to. History was made in 2009 when he was drafted 23rd overall by the Sacramento Kings, becoming the very first Israeli ever to get the chance to be selected in the first round of any NBA draft. Who Is Omri Casspi

Omri Moshe Casspi was born to Shimon and Ilana in Holon, Israel, on the 22nd of June 1988. He has two siblings, a younger sister named, Aviv Casspi and an elder brother called, Eitan. His parents are both Israeli-born and they both have Jewish-Morrocan ancestry as well. Omri has always been interested in sports right from his childhood and this was seen when he played in junior contests such as “Maccabi Rishon LeZion” and “Elitzur Yavne.” In 2005, Omri was moved to the Maccabi Tel Aviv youth team where he won the State Youth Championship at the age of 13.

NBA Career

Omri Casspi made his debut as a professional basketball player with the Maccabi Tel Aviv team when he clocked 17 years of age. He did well to average 2.1 points and 4.2 points in 9.4 minutes per games in the Israeli League during his rookie season. He was later loaned to, Hapoel Galil Elyon, during the 2006-2007 season where he had his first breakthrough season, averaging 3.1 rebounds and 11.1 points over 28 games. At the 2007 Nike Hoop Memphis Summit for the World Select team, Omri Casspi scored 14 points. By the 2007-2008 season, he was called back to Maccabi and helped the team reach the EuroLeague Finals in 2008. In the same year, he managed to average 10.4 points and 4 rebounds per game which made him receive the “Israeli League Sixth Man of the Year award.

Omri Casspi then signed a lucrative multi-year deal with the Houston Rockets on the 16th of July 2013. Four years later on the 20th of February, he got traded from his team to the New Orleans Pelicans, in exchange for new players including; Langston Galloway, Tyreke Evans and Buddy Hield. Omri, unfortunately, broke his right thumb after he had scored a twelve (12) pointer in the 129-99 loss to the “Houston Rocket.” This injury came about just three days after he was traded to the Pelicans. After being ruled out for over 5 weeks, he was waived on the 25th of February 2017.

Other Signings 

Casspi signed up with the Minnesota Timberwolves on the 20th of March 2017 before Moving on to pitch his tent with the Golden State Warriors, on the 12th of July. On the team, Casspi recorded 11 rebounds, 17 points, and a career double-double in the 112-97 win over the Dallas Mavericks, on the 14 of December 2017. Off his impressive performance with the Golden Warriors, he was approached by the Memphis Grizzlies on the 11th of July, 2018 and he ended up signing a deal. It is interesting to note that Omri Casspi has never participated in the NBA Playoffs which in turn makes him the longest active player who hasn’t done so yet. As a result of this, he is ranked at the number five spot in overall league history.

At such a young age, Omri Casspi is already a family man. At the beginning of his career, many thought he would party more and just have a lot of side chicks; but he proved to be a level-headed man. He and his stunning girlfriend of Israeli heritage, Shani Ruderman, walked down the aisle in Tel Aviv Israel, in June 2016. The wedding ceremony was a beautiful one which had only close family members in attendance. Interestingly, the pair has just one child, a daughter named, Sarai Casspi, who they welcomed on the 7th of July 2017.
