Ookay – Biography

He is an American national born on the 10th of January 1992 in Chula Vista, CA, United States. His birth name is Abraham Laguna but there is no other information on his family background or the identity of his parents and siblings. Reports, however, say that his dad performed as a bassist in the past.

He is an alumnus of a community college where he commenced the production of electronic dance tracks in his early 20s. At the initial stage, he went with the moniker Leisure, Laguna, garnering a huge audience for his original, high-energy kind of house music. As he advanced in his career, his musical genre transitioned into more of a trap-oriented style and he made the decision to adopt the new stage name of Ookay. The popular DJ is a current resident of Los Angeles California.

Family

It would appear that the details of his family life and formative years have never come under the spotlight. We only know that he is the son of a bassist who performed a bass solo at Ookay’s Father’s Day set in 2015 at EDC. No siblings or any other relatives have been made public.

Career Achievements

He is an LA-based DJ cum producer with roots in music as his dad earns a living as a bassist. The DJ collaborated with Dipo to remix You Make Me by . He worked with Skink Records – Showtek’s label, to release a single titled Bouncer in collaboration with Showtek on the 10th of March 2014. A couple of weeks later, Spinnin’ Records uploaded an official music video of it on YouTube.

Ookay’s first EP titled Ghost dropped on the 7th of November 2014 via Dim Mak Records which is ‘s label. According to the famed DJ, the purpose of producing the EP that was pretty much not trap was solely to push the boundaries of his skills. He was actually trying to convince fans that he was not a one-trick pony who is only competent at producing trap.

His March 25, 2016 single simply titled Thief, released on the digital platform; the music video was directed by Rumena Dinevska and produced by Davin Tjen. After five days, the single was uploaded on Ookay’s personal YouTube channel. He began working on the track the previous year when he returned from Coachella 2015. Thief sat at #27 on the Billboard’s Dance/Electronic Digital Songs chart on the 19th of August 2016.

His next EP titled Cocoon was released on the 7th of October 2016, consisting of a total of five songs. He participated in a tribute event for his deceased friend – fellow DJ, Big Makk who met his untimely death following a car crash that happened the previous August. Ookay featured as a performer at the event and raised a total donation of $8,000 which all went to the family of the deceased.

Ookay’s 2017 Valentine’s Day single was titled Stay Forever, he later released the single Chasing Colors in collaboration with Marshmello with Noah Cyrus manning the vocals. That same year, precisely on the 1st of September, he went via Monstercat – Canadian independent record label to release the future bass track Lighthouse in partnership with Fox Stevenson, the English singer-songwriter

Lighthouse was described as “a bit repetitive at some points” by Erik of EDM Sauce. Although the single is really good, Erik’s description has denied it the chance to a higher rating.

Music Genres

Ookay is basically known with the musical genre called trap (EDM), in fact, his fans tend to get mad anytime he comes up with anything that is not trap related. That was what informed the content of his second extended play titled Ghost which comprised of several songs that are not trap. According to Ookay, he wanted everyone to know that he can be good at other genres too. He has also delved into Electropop and Future Bass.

Collaborations

The DJ has gone into different collaborations with several known talents in the past. Notable among his partnerships is the remix of You Make Me – Avicci’s song which he did with Dipo.
