Background Information on Kimi Räikkönen

The race champion was born on 17th, October 1979 in Espoo; a suburb of the Finnish capital, Helsinki Finland. He has an elder brother known as Rami Räikkönen. His parents; Matti and Paula were respectively a road builder and an office clerk. To augment the family income, his father Matti had to sometimes work as a night taxi driver and a club bouncer. They didn’t have much but were contented with what they had in their Espoo homestead which had an open countryside ideal for Kimi and his brother to play as much as they wanted.

When Kimi Räikkönen was just three years old, he went on a motorbike tour with his elder brother on miniature motocross bikes that ran on training wheels. It was from this that he began budding his racing talent. By the age of 10, Kimi was already competing in kart races and by age 15, he started competing in Kart races outside (Monaco) of Finnland.

Being good at what he does, he won his first kart race in Norway in the year 1998 when he was 19 years old. Kimi Räikkönen proved that he was quicker on the steering than all other drivers by scoring a championship point at the Australian Grand Prix which was his debut. Räikkönen won his first Grand Prix in Malaysia in 2003 and finished second behind Michael Schumacher in points for the year. He, again, finished second in 2005 when he was with McLaren while he won the Australian Grand Prix in 2007 and ended the season with a win for Ferrari. Kimi left Formula One towards the end of the 2009 season and went back to rallying after a series of signings with McLaren and Mercedes GP all failed, including his refusal to sign with Toyota F1 which didn’t have a “race winning car” and didn’t offer him a good salary.

On the 3rd of April 2010, in the Jordan Rally, he scored his first World Rally Championship (WRC) point, later that same year, on September 18, he won his first rally race in the Rallye Vosgien 2010 in France by winning all six stages of the asphalt rally.

The talented driver formed his own rally team in 2011 called ICE 1 Racing and entered it in the 2011 World Rally Championship. Kimi finished eight in the opening round of Rally Sweden and Seventh in Rally Portugal.

The year 2012 marked his return to Formula One and he did return in style by coming tops in the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix in 2012 with the Lotus F1 team. He ended the season in third place.
