Patty Mills’ Bio

Patrick Sammy Mills was born in Canberra, Australia on the 11th of August 1988. He first took up basketball at the age of four when he started playing for “The Shadows”, a local indigenous club established by his parents.

Patty Mills attended Canberra’s Marist College but had to leave at the end of 2004 to attend Lake Ginninderra College and the Australian Institute of Sport.

As well as playing basketball, Patty also played underage Australian rules football. In 2004, he was competing for the Australian Capital Territory in the national schoolboys’ Australian rules tournament in Perth when a recruiter for the Sydney Swans asked him to visit Sydney and play in the AFL (Australian Football League). He briefly thought about taking up the Swans scholarship before rejecting it to concentrate on basketball.

2006 became a momentous year in Patty Mills’ life; after competing and excelling in various competitions including the Nike Hoop Summit Game, he signed on to play college basketball for Saint Mary’s College of California at the beginning of the 2007-2008 season. In April 2009, after several successes, like earning All-WCC First team honours and helping his college team earn a top 25 ranking for the first time since the 1988-89 season, he declared for the NBA draft.

Career

Upon declaring for the 2009 NBA draft, he had workout sessions with the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Detroit Pistons, and a few other teams. On 25th June 2009, he was selected as the 55th overall pick by the Portland Trail Blazers. Shortly after joining his new team, he fractured the fifth metatarsal in his right foot and was ruled out of the NBA Summer League. He spent a few months moving back and forth between the NBA Development league and the regular league.

Patty Mills did not only appear in two playoff games for the Trail Blazers but during the 2010-2011, he played in 64 games for the team, averaging 5.5 points and 1.7 assists in 12.2 minutes.

In 2011, during the NBA lockout, he returned to Australia to play in the National Basketball League. Shortly after, he received an offer from a Chinese team, Xinjiang Flying Tiger, which he accepted but in January 2012, he was released by the Xinjiang. At the end of the lockout, he returned to the United States, joining the San Antonio Spurs on 27th March 2012.

Finding his feet at Spurs, in 2014, he helped the team return to the NBA finals where they faced the Miami Heat. In Game 5 of the finals, after going up 3-1 in the series, Patty Mills helped the Spurs claim the championship after scoring 14 of his 17 points in the third quarter.

On 4 August 2017, the athlete re-signed with the Spurs on a four-year, $50 million contract.
