Penn Badgley is an American actor and musician. He is known as the lonely boy, Dan Humphrey in his melodramatic role on The CW’s series Gossip Girl (2007–12) which was his ticket to fame, as well as the creepy bookstore owner, Joe in You. He has also starred in a number of films including John Tucker Must Die (2006), The Stepfather (2009), and Cymbeline (2015). Penn is currently the lead singer for Brooklyn-based indie band Mother (aka MOTHXR).

Biography

The MOTHXR frontman was born as Penn Dayton Badgley on November 1, 1986, in Baltimore, Maryland, to Lynne Murphy and Duff Badgley. His father was a newspaper reporter and a carpenter as well as the 2008 Washington Green Party gubernatorial candidate. His parents divorced when he was 12 and his childhood years were split between Woodlake, Virginia and Seattle, Washington.

He attended Woolridge Elementary School where his mother became PTA president though he would complete his primary education at St. Christopher’s School. Penn Badgley had his interest in a lot of things while growing up- athletics, acting, and singing. He played youth soccer in a team his father coached, was involved in acting from a very tender age and while he attended Charles Wright Academy in Tacoma, Washington, he joined the Seattle Children’s Theatre. Concerned with doing what he loves and finding fun therein, he soon began doing voice-overs for children’s radio station.

He turned his love for acting into a career at the age of 11 when he relocated to Hollywood. Combined with his love for portrayals, he also sought a career in singing and recorded a pop single in 1998. By the time he was 14, he has completed his California High School Proficiency Exam and began attending Santa Monica College. After graduation, he was accepted to the University of Southern California but deferred his admission due to contractual obligations. Nevertheless, he later enrolled at Lewis & Clark College, a private liberal arts college in Portland, Oregon, for two years graduating in 2005.

Career

Penn took baby steps into his career while setting his focus on the big picture all the while. He started with doing voice works for video games Mario Golf 64 and Mario Tennis 64 in 1999 and 2000 respectively. He made his on-screen debut in an episode of Will & Grace after which he scored more roles in shows such as DaddioThe Brothers García, and What I Like About You. In no time, he started gaining prominence and establishing his presence in the industry.

From 2000 to 2001, he earned his first regular role as Phillip Chancellor IV on the soap opera, The Young and the Restless which also earned him his first nomination: the 2001 Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Daytime Series. Since then, he has starred in over 10 TV series and in films. His TV credits include The WB’s series Do Over (2002), The Mountain (2004-2005), The Bedford Diaries (2006), What I Like About You (2002), The Twilight Zone (2003), The Slap (2015).

His ticket to fame came in 2007 when he appeared as the main cast in the CW’s teen drama tv series, Gossip Girl. He played the role of Daniel ‘Dan’ Humphrey from 2007 to 2012 appearing in 121 episodes through the six seasons. In 2018, he was also cast in the main role as Joe Goldberg in You which is set to premiere on September 9, 2018.

Besides his television career, Penn Badgley is also prominent in films. He had minor roles in The Fluffer (2000) and Debating Robert Lee (2003), however, his major role came in 2006 when he was cast as Scott Tucker in John Tucker Must Die which became a box office hit in its first week. His other film works include Drive-Thru (2007) Forever Strong (2008), The Stepfather (2009), Easy A (2010), Margin Call (2011), Greetings from Tim Buckley (2012), Parts Per Billion (2014), Cymbeline (2015), The Paper Store (2016), Adam Green’s Aladdin (2016). 

Penn is also ingrained into his musical career. he is the lead vocalist of the band, MOTHXR. They are signed to SoundCloud under the name M O T H E R and released their song Easy on the website in 2014. The following year, the band signed with the labels Kitsuné and Washington Square Music and released their debut album, Centerfold on February 26, 2016.

Wife – Domino Kirke, Dating, Girlfriend

The Gossip Girl actor previously dated his co-star, who portrayed Serena van der Woodsen, from 2007 to 2010. They met on set the series and managed to keep their relationship private and when they did break up, they also did a good job in concealing it from the crew.

He also dated Zoe Kravitz from 2011 to 2013. Their relationship was, however, low key and their split, amicable. They reportedly called it quits to focus on their careers.

Penn began a relationship with the English-American singer, Domino Kirke in 2014. Domino is the daughter of Simon Kirke, the drummer for Free and Bad Company and the owner of Geminola boutique in SoHo, Lorraine. She is the sister of the Girls actress and Lola Kirke who is also an actress.

She was part of the band DOMINO and also works as a doula (someone trained to assist women during childbirth) since 2009, co-founding her own doula business, Carriage House Doulas.

Penn and Domino got married in a New York courthouse on February 27, 2017. On marrying his wife, he became a stepfather to her son, Cassius (born 2009) from a previous relationship with musician Morgan O’Kane. They held a second wedding in June 2017 in an outdoor ceremony with these celebrities , Zac Posen and Debra Messing on their guest list.
