PJ Morton’s Biography

PJ Morton was born on Sunday, the 29th of March, 1981 in New Orleans, Louisiana, United States. He is born to the family of Bishop Paul S. Morton, a Canadian-born American Gospel Singer and Debra Brown Morton, a pastor of Greater St. Stephen Full Gospel Baptist Church. PJ Morton is of the Afro-American ethnicity and unlike his parents, grew up to become non-religious.

For his education, Morton attended and graduated from St. Augustine High School after which he proceeded to Morehouse College to major in Marketing. He earned his BA in 2003.

Joining Maroon 5

As a touring member, he became a part of the Maroon 5 band in 2010, when his friend and Maroon 5’s musical director asked him to audition for a position in the band as a keyboardist and backing vocalist. Being the first to audition, he left an indelible mark on the group and since then, he has played with the band in concerts and other live performances.

From 2012-1014, PJ Morton filled-in for the band’s keyboardist, Jesse Carmichael who was away on an indefinite hiatus from performing with the group. As a full member of the Maroon 5 band, he contributed his vocals and was an integral part of the instrumentation on the band’s fourth studio album, Overexposed. He was also on board during the recording of the band’s 2014 and 2017 albums, V and Red Pill Blues.

In 2011, Morton’s solo work won the attention of Mack Maine who signed him to his production company, Soothe Your Soul and Young Money Entertainment. Thus, on 14th May 2013, his debut studio album was released with Young Money Records, entitled New Orleans. Its lead single, ‘Only One’ featuring was nominated for Best R&B Song at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards in 2014.

Although Gumbo did not manage to enter on U.S Billboard chart, upon its release, it received positive reviews from most music critics and also earned Morton two Grammy nominations for Best R&B Album and best R&B song at the 60th Grammy Awards. After winning the Grammy Awards, Morton also won the Dove and Stellar Awards 2008.

Who is PJ Morton’s Wife?

PJ Morton is married to Kortni Morton a professional hairstylist. The pair grew up in New Orleans with both families attending the Greater St. Stephen Church where PJ Morton’s mom Debra Brown Morton worked closely with Kortni’s mother.

After Kortni’s family were wrecked by Hurricane Katrina, her family relocated to Atlanta where she reunited with PJ who at the time was a studying at Morehouse College. They wedded on Christmas day 2008 and the union is blessed with three kids.
