Not everything can be explained by science, after all. This is the ultimate discovery made by a prominent astronomer, Dr. J. Allen Hynek, in the course of his investigation into life beyond earth and some supposed UFO encounters and unexplained phenomena in the 1950s and 1960s. His studies and many more are played out in History’s historical drama TV series, Project Blue Book, which has been praised for its excellent cast and storytelling.
The series is based on the real-life, top-secret series of studies of Unidentified Flying Objects (UFOs) and related phenomena conducted by the United States Air Force from 1952 to 1969. Bob Gunton appeared as the 33rd President of the United States, Harry S. Truman in the series while took on the role of Professor Hynek. Background Details On Project Blue Book
In the mid-1900s, the U.S. Air Force took on some interesting projects including the investigation of unidentified flying objects (UFOs). The first was Project Sign from 1947 to 1948 and was succeeded by the short-lived Project Grudge in 1949.
Project Blue Book took up the study of flying saucers from where the others left off, in 1952. The new project set out to determine if UFOs were a threat to national security as well as to scientifically analyze UFO-related data. It was undertaken by astrophysics professor—and eventual ufologist—Dr. J. Allen Hynek and his partner Air Force Captain Michael Quinn. The duo investigated sightings across the U.S. during which Dr. Hynek made the ultimate discovery that not everything can be explained by science.
Project Blue Book was terminated in December 1969, and officially ended in January 1970. In conclusion, the investigators stated that most of the UFO reports collected (more than 12,000) were misidentifications of natural phenomena (clouds, stars, etc.) or conventional aircraft which must have greatly influenced the supposed UFO sightings. The findings also provided a firm response to the questions about the existence of UFOs claiming among other summaries that no UFO reported, investigated, and evaluated by the Air Force was ever an indication of threat to national security.
Project Blue Book, while sparking interest in the existence of UFOs, claimed to have solved the mystery once and for all by chalking it up to natural phenomenon. The US Air force may believe the final report of Project to be true, but skeptics and experts alike still asks: Are we really alone in the universe?
History knows the truth is still out there. Five decades later, History TV took up the reins to reenact the UFO investigation story. The resultant TV series is based on the real-life Project Blue Book.
Project Blue Book Cast: Famous Stars behind the UFO Research Drama Series
Set in the 50s and 60s, the History TV series, Project Blue Book features a stellar cast of actors. Most of their characters are inspired by real-life players in the Air Force project. There are also some historical figures depicted in the series.
Taking the lead role is ‘s Aidan Gillen as Dr. J. Allen Hynek, one of the key players in the Project Blue Book. He is an astrophysicist and astronomer and, later, a Ufologist. With Gillen on the cast is Neal McDonough in the role of General James Harding, a high-ranking government official. He is also the co-founder of Project Blue Book.
Also on the main cast list is Vampire Diaries’ Enzo as a pilot in the Air Force named Captain Michael Quinn who worked with Hynek on the project, Laura Mennell appears in the role of Hynek’s wife, Mimi Hynek and appears as Susie Miller, Mimi’s friend.
There is also Michael Harney who portrayed General Hugh Valentine, a high-ranking officer in the United States Air Force as well as the co-founder of Project Blue Book. Harney is known for his role in the Netflix original series, as Correction Officer Sam Healy.
Making up the cast in recurring roles are Robert John Burke, Ian Tracey, Matt O’Leary, Nicholas Holmes, Currie Graham, and Jill Morrison.
Some of the historical figures depicted in Project Blue Book and the actors who portrayed them include Adam Greydon Reid as an American writer and UFO researcher known as Donald Keyhoe and Thomas Kretschmann as Wernher Von Braun, a German-American aerospace engineer. Bob Gunton portrayed the 33rd POTUS, Harry S. Truman and Robert John Burke as the 1st Secretary of Defence, James Forrestal.
Has the Series Been Canceled?
While a termination order was given to the real-life Project Blue Book in 1969, the series still has a long time to stay on TV. A 10-episode season one premiered on January 8th, 2019 and was renewed for a second season one month later on February 10. Season one concluded on March 12, 2019, and filming for the sophomore season began on July 15, 2019, in Vancouver. It is expected to conclude on November 13, 2019.
The second season of Project Blue Book will probably not return until 2020 given the first was a mid-season debut.
