QPark gained widespread fame and success when he created a social media comedy career filming events where he exaggerated real-life situations. His penchant for over the top simulations and occasionally embarrassing himself have endeared him to fans all over cyberspace.
However, the Korean-American comedian’s story isn’t like that of many other stars who found success through social media. QPark may have found fame through social media but he was already successful long before that. He worked in the finance sector as an investment banker for over six years before he opened up his own chain of businesses, finding success in each. However, he was not satisfied or fulfilled IN either and that was when he ventured into comedy.
QPark’s Biography
QPark was born as Joyce Tanner in his home country of South Korea on July 17, 1979. Together with his parents and brother, the family moved to the US when Joyce was still a kid. He spent his formative years in America where he attended Horace Mann School for his high school education. After graduating from Horace Mann in 1996, QPark moved on to Yale University where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and graduated in 2000.
In the same year, Joyce “QPark” Tanner started a career as an analyst at New York’s Merrill Lynch Financial Services. He was there for two years and was subsequently hired by Morgan Joseph & Co. Inc. While there, he served as the vice president for the company’s media and entertainment department. QPark later revealed that he was burnt out in the six years he worked at Morgan Joseph as he had to work nearly 100 hours every week.
QPark quit Morgan Joseph in 2009 and ventured into business. He launched his own Korean BBQ restaurant. The venture proved successful and led the former financial analyst to start up three more restaurants. He eventually got bored with the business as he realized he took more pleasure in eating food than making it.
After he picked a major interest in social media, QPark sold his entire restaurant business in 2014 so he could focus on becoming a social media comedian and influencer. bbAt the time, he already had a Vine account which he had created in 2013. After he decided to make a career on social media, his Vine followership quickly grew to over 3 million and he had lucrative advertisement deals with huge brands like Marvel, Spotify, Gap, Pepsi, Dunkin’ Donuts, Hewlett Packard, Comcast, Kia, Smirnoff, Adult Swim and more.
He was only posting photos on his Instagram until 2013 when he started posting a few comedy sketches. In his first video, he tried to scare passers-by with a fake snake. Instagram would eventually become his preferred social media platform after Vine shut down permanently in 2017.
QPark’s work at the media company Morgan Joseph inspired him to create a Youtube channel in May 2007. He uploaded his first video on the same day. However, it was another six years before he got around to uploading his second video. The most popular video on his channel is ’10 Hours of Walking in NYC as Kim Jong Un’. In the video, he dresses a friend up to look like North Korea’s President Kim Jong Un, while he dresses as his bodyguard. Together they walk around the streets of New York City as a social experiment to see how people in America will react to the political figure. It was posted on October 22, 2017. As of June 2019, it has garnered over 25 million views.
Some of his other most popular videos include ‘Bad Bunny X Ozuna X Nicky Jam – “Te Bote Remix” – Singing in Public!!’, ‘Best of Bad Bunny – Singing In Public Compilation by QPark!!’, and ‘Dame Tu Cosita Challenge (The New Version!!) in Public!!!’. All of these videos have since garnered massive seven-figure views.
Instagram and Youtube are his major platforms nowadays with each of his uploads on each channel platform garnering massive view counts. However, he is also active on Twitter and Facebook.
What is QPark’s Net Worth?
The social media influencer’s income hasn’t come from his social media career alone. As stated earlier, he worked as an investment banker for two years, and as a VP in a media company for six years. He has also owned a restaurant chain as well. It would be right to argue that QPark was already sitting on some good money before his social media days.
According to some sources online, his videos make anywhere from as low as $13k to as high as $ 220k per month. This doesn’t include the money from his many endorsement deals. These sources state that the comedian and former entrepreneur has a net worth pegged at about $2 million.
Facts About the Instagram Star
One of the reasons QPark sold his restaurant business is because he realized that he preferred to eat food rather than make it.
The internet sensation has made time for romance in his life. He is dating his longtime girlfriend Edith Oquendo. She is his business partner and is oftentimes the one behind the camera.
Across all his social media platforms, the comedian has garnered a fanbase of well over 15 million.
His Kim Jong Un video was inspired by a social experiment video he had done titled ’10 Hours of Walking in NYC wearing a Romper’.
QPark stands at 5 feet 7 inches (1.70 m).
