Partner, Wife, or Girlfriend, Is She Gay or Lesbian?

Rachel Maddow has publicly identified as a lesbian ever since she was a freshman at Stanford University. The eccentric television host first revealed her sexual orientation to friends in her dorm before going public by speaking to the school’s student university newspaper.

As the story goes, Maddow wrote a public letter that was published in her dormitory’s bathroom stalls after she had been on the receiving end of some homophobic comments. Following the positive feedback, she went ahead to speak to the student newspaper with another friend that was a lesbian. She revealed that despite having been in good romantic relationships with men in the past, she was very much attracted to women and has decided to fully embrace what she has become.

At the time, Maddow’s parents did not know about her sexuality, and she was supposed to have gone back home to inform them before the story was published. However, as things would pan out, the story was published before she could tell them, as an unknown person went ahead to forward the article to them. Her parents were said to have been very embarrassed about the situation, but they have since come around to love their daughter regardless of her sexual choice.

Rachel Maddow has since gone ahead to become the first openly lesbian anchor in the United States to host a major prime-time news program. She has also embarked on a long term relationship with Susan Mikula – an artist and photographer known for her use of old polaroid cameras. The pair first met in 1998 when Mikula hired Maddow to work on her 2-acre pre-civil war farmhouse in Berkshires, Western Massachusetts. Their first date was said to be at a National Rifle Association event called “Ladies Day on the Range”. They dated for about a year and a half before deciding to go a step further by moving in together. Today, the two who are not yet officially married share an apartment in West Village, New York as well as the Massachusetts farmhouse which they visit on weekends.
