The multi-talented actress was born Regina Rene King on January 15, 1971, in Los Angeles, California. She was brought up in View Park-Windsor Hills alongside her sister Reina King who is now also an actress, by their parents, Gloria and Thomas King.

When she was only eight years old, her parents’ marriage ended in divorce and so she ended up with her mother alongside her younger sister while her father who had two children from a previous relationship, drifted out of their lives. Her mother struggled to raise the girls all by herself, giving them all the encouragement they needed to dream and pursue whatever dreams they had, which happened to be acting. She enrolled the girls in acting classes. For her education, King went to Westchester High School from where she graduated in 1988 and after this, she went to the University of Southern California.

Regina King’s career as an actress began in 1985 when she got a role in 227 which she became a part of until 1990. Her first movie role came in Boyz n the Hood in 1991, followed by Poetic Justice in 1993 in which she appeared alongside legendary rapper, and . Following this, she acted in other films including Higher Learning (1995), A Thin Line Between Love and Hate (1996), Legally Blonde 2: Red, White & Blonde (2003), Our Family Wedding (2010), and If Beale Street Could Talk (2018).

More than just that, she has also directed several productions including Being Mary Jane (2015), Animal Kingdom (2016), This Is Us (2017), and The Good Doctor (2018). One other area where she has greatly excelled is voice acting having voiced for Dynamite in Planes: Fire & Rescue (2014), Kreela in The Ant Bully (2007), and Riley and Huey Freeman in The Boondocks from 2005 to 2014.

Through her career, she has won many awards such as BET Awards, NAACP Image Awards, Primetime Emmy Awards, and Golden Globe Awards among others. Her most popular works include Ray (2005), Southland (2009 to 2013), American Crime (2015 to 2017), and If Beale Street Could Talk (2018).

Husband and Son – Ian Alexander Jr.

In the past, Regina King has dated a number of men including Curtis Baldwin whom she dated in 1985 before she moved on to date Ian Alexander. The couple had a son together, Ian Alexander Jr. who was born on January 21, 1996. In 1997, they got married with her grandfather walking her down the aisle because her father was struggling with health issues.

By 2007, she would hear the word “divorce” again, but this time around, it was the actress going through what her mother had gone through many years before as her marriage came to an end. From then on, she kept co-parenting Ian Alexander Jr. with her ex-husband. At the 2019 Golden Globes, Ian Jr. made a lot of buzz with the kind of support he gave his mother who won the award for Best Supporting Actress — Motion Picture in If Beale Street Could Talk.

Following her divorce, King had gone on to date others including Quentin Richardson in 2006, Nicholas Gonzalez in 2007, and then she had a relationship with Malcolm-Jamal Warner which lasted two years from 2011 to 2013.
